Q: Is it ok to recycle these envelops with other white office paper? Or do they belong to the garbage bin?
I asked our recycling guy a year ago, and he said it's just fine to leave the windows in.
Q: Do they get melted down with the paper particles or is there someone that removes the plastic parts? Just curious.
These bits of plastic get caught in the screens that filter the water out after the paper is pulped, since they are no good for making new paper. These filters take out all kinds of contamination that would be bad for the new paper. The sludge left on the screens is usually discarded in the landfill, but in some areas it's composted.
Q: will the house retain heat if plastic windows and frames are installed?
Very little. It is the trapped air inside insulation that makes it work. If the windows and or frames are insulated, then yes. The problem is, the gas used to insulate windows is not a do it yourself thing.
Q: Ok so me my bf moved in together last may and have had about a 115-138 dollar power bill every following month. All of a sudden the past 2 months our bill came in at $200 bux! Iam so frustrated bc I always keep stuff turned OFF lights TV's ect. When they aren't being used..Constantly goen behind him turning crap OFF!BTW (Annoying) Decembers bill came in at 206+late fee!? I thought wow ok it is cold outside lately maybe its the heater? Then this months came in at $238 iam astonished dnt know how 2 pay it! So i put plastic from an old shower curtain up over windows even though i was told use plastic painters would use:) all i had was shower curtain! Will this even drasticly help reduce bill!? Could it also be that our hot water pipes aren't covered? Idk if they are or not but can find out really quick! Plz any real helpful answers will be much appreciated!
Putting plastic over the windows is more helpful to reduce air leaks, but does provide a space between the glass and the interior air. Shower curtains are fairly thick, and should work well. The amount of electricity used by light bulbs is miniscule. TVs, cable/satellite boxes, and many electronics continue to use power even when turned off.
Q: is the space between the glass and the window seal important
I've lived in a few rentals where we had to weatherstrip the windows, and at no time did it ever occur to me that the landlord should pay for it. Weatherstripping is just part of living life in a colder climate. You don't need to pay outrageous amounts for expensive weatherstripping products. If the gap is an inch or two at the top of your window, just roll up some old towels or cleaning rags to fit into the gap. They'll stop the wind just as well as some plastic product you have to pay for at the hardware store, and your curtains or blinds will cover them anyway, so you don't have to care if it doesn't look too good. If the windows have an actual structural problem, though, so that they really can't be closed tightly enough to lock, you might try to convince the landlord to have repairs done based on the fact that they're a security hazard. (Yeah, I know, nobody's likely to break in to an attic, but you can at least try.)
Q: I'm thinking of buying wool army blankets for every window. Is that the warmest and cheapest thing?Plastic may plug up drafts, but it has never kept the house warm.
Sounds like you are in an old house with single pane windows. Go to Home Depot and talk to them about weather stripping your windows and doors. Check all the outlets on outside walls too. They make an insert you can put under the cover plate to stop drafts. You might look into the plastic that you heat up and it forms a tight seal on the windows. Insulated drapes would help a lot as well. Good Luck!!
Q: Our landlord is obsessed with everything looking the same, but people here want to put up their own window treatments. What are tenant rights in this situation?
I would take them down and store them in a neatly packed box, and put them back up when I left. Meanwhile, while living there, I'd put up window treatments that I liked. But, anything that you do that causes the slightest damage, like nail or screw holes, will have to be repaired when you leave in order to get your deposit back.
Q: Ok i have a couple bonsai trees and some other assorted potted plants and i wanted to know if i put plastic sheets on the windows to keep the cold from affecting the plants if that would affect how much light the plants will get. And if it does affect it, by how much? Thx for any help i can get
No as long as you see the light going through this only affects pets the need to bask in the sun and get UVA/B rays from the sun for Vitamin D because plastic and glass filters out the rays not the light.
Q: I'm moving out of my apartment in a couple weeks and i have these plastic-like window blinds around the place. I was wondering if anyone knew how to get these things clean without taking them down? They're supposed to be white but I'm noticing a couple yellowish-brownish stains on them. I've tried all sorts of chemicals to try and get these things cleaned. No luck at all.
I have the same problem with mine. I've tried everything! Cleaning products you use to clean the kitchen and floors, vinegar, bleach, Oxiclean, etc... Nothing I've tried has even faded the stains. I have finally given up and believe the only way to get rid of the stains, is to replace the blinds with new ones.
Q: I tried cleaning my plastic windows in my truck with water thinking if i wiped it up right away it wouldn't leave any spots but it did... I'm not trying to buy anything expensive and I was under the impression you don't use windex on plastic... Any ideas?
Good idea I Will try my self later Thanks
