Q: The application is a bathroom light and exhaust fan combination. The fixtures wires are thiner than the supply wires. Should I wrap the thinner wire around the thicker wire or should I wrap them equally around each other? Then can I put a drop of solder on before I put the wire nut. Or is solder not a good idea?
If the supply wires are solid and the fixture wires are stranded put the stranded wire slightly past the end of the solid, say 1/16. Then put a yellow wire nut on them. Tug on the stranded wire to be sure it caught. If the wires are both solid, try twisting the larger wire around the smaller one. It is tricky but if you let your lineman's pliers slip a little as you twist it should work. Cut back to about 1/2 to 5/8 and install the yellow wire nut. Time was wires were soldered together, but properly installed wire nuts are just fine.
Q: Steel wire or iron wire. spool of wire used mainly in the iron frame of the building foundation..
What burns in a building are mostly the furnishings and interior, not the frame it's made of. Steel buildings are more expensive to insure against fire than wood frame buildings, because in a fire more steel is damaged by warping and distortion than would happen in a wood-framed structure, and wood structures are easier (and cheaper) to repair. Of course, if everything in a building was non-flammable, fire would never occur. That doesn't usually happen, though, and it's all the flammable stuff that most buildings house inside that burns.
Q: Is there really a difference between audio wire and regular house wire? If you say yes then please explain, in understandable scientific terms why, or point me to a site that can.
Solid Copper Wire
Q: Is high quality CAT-5 ok to wire surround sound speakers to the receiver?
Noooo! Bad idea! Cat 5 is telecommunications wire, and typically designed to carry high frequency, low voltage, low power signals (i.e., network data). There are also typically four pairs of wire twisted at different numbers of turns per foot under that pretty blue jacket. These factors combine to make cat 5 a reeeally bad choice for speaker wire, and if you have big juicy amps, it might even burn your house down when it goes white-hot and sets itself on fire. If ya gotta go cheap, use 18 guage zip cord, which is insulated much better and has lots of copper strands to carry power. It usually has some marking or pattern on one side so you can keep your polarity (+ and -) straight. That's vital because your bass and your surround sound accuracy will be way bad if you get some of your speakers hooked up backwards. This may sound a bit whacked, but a good rule of thumb is to spend about 20% of the value of your gear on cables- they carry the information that eventually hits your ears as sound waves- and if any set of connections is bad, you lose quality and impact before you ever even hear it. It's tragic. If you don't believe this, go to a decent A/V store and do blind tests with good gear and different interconnects and speaker cables. It makes a difference- which is why I make my own interconnects...buts that's another question. Hope this helps.
Q: Can anyone give me some info or a website with info on which type of wire carries sound waves best?
Wire does not carry soundwaves, at least not unless the ends of the wire have tin cans on them, and the wire is pulled taut between them! Wires can carry electrical signals which can be used to reproduce the sounds that caused them. This is how sound comes from such as your stereo system's speakers. Maybe that's what you actually mean? If so, copper wires (insulated, of course) are what you want, and if the distance you run the wires is great, the heavier the wire (gauge) the better. If you are transmitting high power to speakers, the wires have to be capable of handling the electrical current involved.
Q: I need to wire a single 120v outlet from the 240v volt wire I use on my compressor. Im installing a 120v electric automatic drain valve on my large shop air compressor. The compressor is wired up with SJ00W 10-AWG, 4-wire power cable (red, green, black white wires). and is rated at 240v @ 15-amp(compressor not wire). The drain valve uses a normal house hold current wiring config. (black, white and open copper)The 240v power supply is the only supply I have near by, (two of them actually) Or I would just wire the automatic valve off an outlet and call it a day. So How do I wire a 120v 3-wire set up from the 240v 4-wire supply? Thanks
While it is not code, and I wouldn't advertise that you're doing it, you can quite easily take standard 12-2 romex, hook black to black, white to white and bare copper to the green, then install a 20 amp GFCI receptacle on the end of the 12-2 to run your drain valve.
Q: I have a 2004 mit lancer and im trying to instal 2 sets of kicker rs65.2 door speakers having trouble with the back the wires on the right are yellow and one has a red stripe the other has a green stripe and the left speaker is a solid green and blue wire how in the heck am i suppose to match those up with the black and red the right seems obvious but i dont want to mess anything up

Q: I have a question on Razer Naga Epic.Does the USB charger wire also act as a mouse signal wire or is it still a warless signal even if it's plugged in thru a wire?Bottom line, is the wire in the Razer Naga Epic only for charging?
hmmmm i like the mamba. never really tried the ouroboros. looks cool but mamba is definitly amazing!
Q: I have a 2 wire system in my garage and need to update to a 3 wire grounded plug. Can I leave my existed 2 conductor and just run a single 12 gauge insulated ground in the same conduit back to the panel/grounding rod. Or do I need to pull out the 2 wore replace with 3 wire ?
It will could be tough to pull if there are existing wires in there. You may need to tie a line to what you remove, then lube a new set of wires, and pull the new line and wire back through.
Q: I NEED TO CHECK IF A WIRE IS GOOD ON A FITNESS MACHINE. HOW DO I KNOW IF ITS GOOD? WHAT SHOULD THE OHMS BE?
This is true for most wires of practical sizes in devices like fitness bikes or treadmills. If you have a multimeter, you will find there is a setting for reading resistance, which is marked in Ohms. If you set the meter for that setting, you will notice that when you touch the red and black probes together, the meter will read ZERO ohms or close to it. There is a little knob somewhere to set it to zero. Then you can read a wire by touching the probes to the opposite ends of the wire. If the wire is sound, the reading will again be zero (equivalent to touching the probes together). If you don't get zero, the wire may be damaged or corroded. Watch for corrosion, which will give you a high-resistance reading. If the wire is one conductor in a cable with numerous wires in it, you will have to look for the opposite ends of the same conductor. They will probably be color coded, which makes it easier. Good luck.
