- Q: I bought a single pole dimmer switch to install in my dining room and when I took the old switch out nothing looked right. There are two wires which were joined together by another single wire which was attached to the top screw. There was another single wire (I believe the ground wire) attached to the bottom screw. I disconnected the first two wires and attached them separately to the black wires on the dimmer and attached the ground wires together. It didn't work. I've tired several different times with no luck. I put the wires back the way they were and attached them to the old switch and they no longer work ether. Help! How can I fix this problem? The old wires appear to be a very thick copper covered in black plastic and cloth.....

- Q: to which wire in the back of my car radio do i hook my remote wire to from my amplifier?
- Most factory radios, your Corolla included do not have a dedicated remote wire. Some will have a power antenna wire that can sometimes be used but the Corolla doesn't have a power antenna. You want to connect the amp remote to a switched 12V + source. The appropriate wire on your factory radio is the gray wire. That way, the amp will turn on whenever you turn on the ignition. Alternatively, you can connect the remote directly to any switched 12V wire.
- Q: How do I tell which wire is positive and which wire is negative on the door speakers and the rear speakers?
- Unplug the wires and note which wire goes where. then apply a battery to the speaker terminals, 9volt will work fine. If the cone moves out you have it connected to the proper + and - if it moves in then its backwards. With that you should be able to figure out which wires are + and -. Or you can just buy a service manual.
- Q: I'm not sure what kind of wire to use to make wire rings. I had found 50ft of thin wire for a cheap price from city mill. Is there a difference between wire from city mill and wire from Walmart or Ben Franklin? I went to Walmart yesterday and the wire was expensive for such a short length. Am I able to use wire from city mill or is it different from wire you would get from a craft store? To me, wire is wire but i really don't know much about crafts.
- difficult problem. try searching on yahoo and bing. that will help!
- Q: i need to make a battery powered light bulb and i have copper wire at home...will it work?
- Copper wire is rather orange in color. If it is insulated it will be surrounded by a coating of plastic for its entire length. If you cut it and then look at its end the copper wire should be in the middle with the insulation around it like a doughnut. Insulation can be of any color and is not always plastic. The copper wire itself can be either solid and made up of a single strand, or stranded and thus composed of numerous much smaller diameter strands. Stranded wire is more flexible and is the type used commonly for lamps, but sold copper wire, although stiffer, will work as well.
- Q: for california electrical code, am i limited to insert no more than one wire per knockout on a box ?
- no. the number of wires in the box is restricted based on the volume of the box but the number of wires entering a knock out is restricted by the size of the conduit or the cable type connected to the knock out.
- Q: I live in a condo and Im trying to wire a new light. When I wire it, it stays on constantly despite hitting the switch. The wiring Im dealing with is as follows. At the switch on the wall, there is a red wire, brown wire connected to the switch. A green wire connected to the box in the walll behind the switch. In the ceiling there is a brown wire, green wire, and a white wire wrapped with an unstripped red wire.Coming from the fixture are black, white, green.Ive tried connected black-brown, white-white green-green but the light stays on no matter what. Also tried white-brown, black-white, green to bolt. Still the same thing happens. Not sure what to do.
- Assuming (and one never should) that the red wire at the switch is actually stripped and around one of the two terminal screws, then it should be correct, previously this ceiling box must have been being used for possibly a smoke detector or anything that they wanted to remain hot... but you should be able to (and either turn off the breaker, remove the fuse, or at least make certain that the switch is in the off position if you can, and look closely, often they get installed upside down, but dont confuse this with three and four way light circuits, lol) strip this end of the red wire at the ceiling box and wire nut green to green, white to white, and the remaining black (should be) from the light fixture to the red you stripped, this should solve the problem for you. - Q: What are those strange ball-like things that are on some electric/telephone wires? I think they're on electric wires. I've always wondered.
- they are there so you can see the wires better.... that way planes helicopters etc. dont run into them
- Q: Hey there, so my cat chewed through some of my wires, what should I do to like fix them?
- If the wires are not chewed apart completely, and the two wires are not touching each other you can just use black electrical tape.
- Q: I am wiring a GFCI receptacle with two regular receptacles after it.So before the GFCI I have my 12/2 wire from where it will hook into the box (the line side), after it I have my wire going to the two other receptacles (the load side).Well the GFCI receptacle has screw terminals for the line HOT and WHITE wires as well as a GROUND. On the bottom it has screw terminals for the load side but ONLY the HOT and WHITE, no ground screw.Does this mean that I don't hook up the ground for the load wire or does it mean I have to pigtail the ground to the same screw the line ground is using?I didn't want to assume that I connect the line and load grounds out of fear I was circumventing the GFCI.
- i have an older home with metal boxes, so i attach the line ground to the ground screw in the box approximately in the middle of that wire. then i use the remainder of the wire as a pigtail and attach all of the remaining ground wires to the tail of that wire, plus a pig tail lead to the gfci outlet's ground terminal. if you have plastic boxes, you would skip the grounding of the box, and just join them all together, plus the lead for the outlets ground screw. you may find a picture of this in the instructions that came with the outlet, although they usually are kind of small and hard to read. good luck, hope this helped.
