You remove the excess caulk with your finger leaving a nice rounded fillet. The caulk will act like a glue to hold the sink firmly to the countertop.

That kind of sink is man made and needs only windex to clean. Ceramic doesn't melt. If this is a rental unit you'll have to replace it. Stores sell a can drain clearer that you put over drain and push down. It has a large red top with a pencil sized hole. The can seals itself against drain and shoots a powerful air blast down to clear it out when you push down on the can.

Since, I have done this I am getting a sewage smell especially when I am running water. What can I do?: Make sure the trap is working properly. The trap needs to maintain water in order for it to stop venting up sewerage. if there is too much of a drop from the sink to the bottom of the trap it will siphon some of the water out of the trap leaving a air gap which will aspirate and vent up. unless there is something still in the sink or pipe before the trap causing the smell, the system is not vented or its not trapped properly. good luck
