- Not much you can do really. Usually the smell is trapped in the padding and not the carpet. Only real solution I know is to tear it out and replace the padding and carpet. I would also contact a pro service (can usually get 3 rooms for $100). The equipment they use may be better than equipment for home use. Check the guarantee the company offers. Make sure they guarantee your satisfaction with the results. Just don't expect miracles...there is only so much they can do with smells in carpet pad.

- 9 by 12 = 108 ft?, and $27/108 = 1/4 dollar per ft?, or $0.25 / ft? 8 by 14 = 112 ft?, and $28/112 = $0.25 / ft? price is the same, so he buys the size that best fits his needs.

- My favorite method for cleaning carpets involves renting a carpet machine for the weekend, NOT buying the cleaner that they offer, and instead using lemon scented ammonia and plain vinegar with hot water in the cleaning machine. This is a very clean rinsing formula that will cut grime and pet odors without damaging the carpet. New padding is a must but you can clean the carpets and then pull them outside to dry while you replace the padding and mop the underfloor with the sudsy ammonia and vinegar mix. 2 cups ammonia 2 cups vinegar 1 full tank of hot water on the carpet machine Please remember! Keep all bleach and bleaching products away from the ammonia! Once the carpets and floor are dry the ammonia is dispersed and you will not have to worry about a negative chemical reaction in the future.
- Q: hi we bought a new black wool rug last week and since then my life has been taken over by little black hairs! they are all over the laminate floor, the furniture and our clothes. i have tried sweeping the rug but although i get quite a lot of hairs out of it, they just keep coming! my friend got a wool rug a year ago and although it has settled a bit she still has a similar problem. is there anything i can do to speed up the excess fluff loss or am i going to spend the rest of my time with a dustpan and brush in my hands?

- Q: I just moved into this house and im so paranoid about keeping the floor in good shape, i have a 1 year old and a puppy who are making it kinda hard. So, I need a rug, my living room isnt very big at all, and in fact the living room is kinda long, but not 'big'. I want a red rug, dont know where to search though, and it would be great if i got it at a low price too, what size is a 2x3 by the way? I found one for 20 bucks, but not sure if thats like the size of a rug you put at the entrance of your doorway? help please.
- A 2-foot by 3-foot rug would be fine at your doorway, but it won't give the rest of the room any protection, just a place to wipe your feet when you enter the house. Your room-area rug can be as big as the room will accomodate...but the bigger the rug, of course, the more $$$ you'll have to invest. You could start with a 6-foot by 9-foot in front of your sofa, which you could probably get at Walmart/Target/K-Mart for around $125. It will be nylon, and it won't last an eternity, but it should do until your puppy matures! Then you could look at investing in a nicer rug that won't get chewed on...or you-know-whatted on.....Good luck!
- Q: Life span is 5 years on this bright white carpet. They lived here 2 years before us, and didnt replace the carpets before we moved in, and we lived here for 2 years.. - Judges in my area use a 7 year life on carpet. It really depends on the quality of carpet and how long it should last. Nylon carpet is better than olefin and lasts longer, but is more expensive and will last longer and clean better. In the same vain, my state puts only a 2 years life on interior paint in a rental. Have you had a professional carpet cleaning company see if they can clean it and get the spots out? If the spots are from dirt that would be more in line with normal wear an tear. If the spots are from pets stains, food, and spills that is not normal. No matter what, you should not be charged for the entire cost of a new carpet, but depreciate the carpet no less than 50%.

- Get a gallon jug of Acetone from Home Depot in the paint department. Pull all the old carpet up, pull up the tarboard sound deadening material, then pour out the Acetone and scrub the floor using steel wool to clean up any glue or tar that might be on the floor. Once you've got the floor pans clean, paint them with flat black paint to protect them from rusting. Finally, you can find replacement carpet at a parts store, just glue it down with contact cement.
