Q:We have very nice new wood floors. I have a rug and I need to put a carpet pad under it. Is there a particular kind of carpet pad I should use? I'm afraid it will damage the wood floors somehow. I bought a carpet pad that is like a rubbery grid, just afraid to use it!: Carefully, with the flat edge of a screwdriver, lift the staple straight up, and see if it will come up in one move. If it doesn't, carefully lift the edge which will come up, and pull the rest of the staples up with those long thin pliers. They are near the edges of the room, aren't they? Do they have thin boards attached to some ends? We took about two days to do this with a rowhouse in Baltimore, and once we got the hang of the long flat headed screwdriver, and the delicate pliers, we were set to go. We also did have to remove these plywood type rulers set near the corners of the room. Once we polished, the staple marks weren't noticeable at all.

What should I do?: Hey,i happen to have a sisal rug myself!! Firstly, it depends on the kind of sisal rug you have. There are two types: synthetic fiber, which may contain nylon or wool-blend materials; and natural fiber, made of plant products such as sea grass, paper, or coconut fibers. To safely clean synthetic-fiber sisals, follow the manufacturer's directions, which may recommend hot-water extraction or a dry-cleaning method. Manufacturers of natural-fiber sisals suggest only a dry-cleaning method. Do not steam-clean or wet-shampoo; liquids or excessive dampness may cause these rugs to shrink or pucker. For spot-cleaning a stain, lightly mist the area with the manufacturer's recommended cleaning solution (do not pour or heavily apply any cleanser directly onto the rug). Then blot the damp area with a white towel and continue blotting until the stain is removed. A fabric protectant may be applied to both types of sisal rugs during the manufacturing process or by the consumer. But regular wear and tear and cleaning can decrease its effectiveness; it may need to be reapplied.=] thx,

Q:I have light carpets (builder special!) and a 2 yr. old and a 4 yr. old. I keep them clean (the carpets and the kids!), but hate to pay for the professional carpet cleaners all that often. I often use Woolite OXY Clean, but I just keep finding more spots. Seems a daily battle. Does anyone know a quot;home remedyquot; I can use to spot remove? I have tried Oxy Clean, and even tho my carpet it light it has bleached some places.: If you don't find the stain right away, mix a diluted solution of vinegar, soap and water. Dampen a cloth with this solution and press firmly against the stain for several moments. Blot dry with a a rinse cloth. You can also mix equal parts salt and baking soda, add several drops of white vinegar and enough water to make a paste. Check carpet for color fastness, then apply the paste to the stain and let it set. When it's dry, brush it away and the stain should go with it. For a particulary nasty stain, scrub it when you first apply the paste.

Q:Would a K?rcher pressure washer clean a rug as successfully as it cleans a flagstone?: Maybe, if it's a cheap rug that can take the abuse of the water pressure you take it outside so that the gallons gallons of water you end up using don't end up in the house, but it's kind of overkill I honestly wouldn't do it if you care about the rug's lifespan.

Q:the corners of my rug keep bending and it alllways gets messed up and wrinkledin this middle. why does it do thatt=[: My girfriend used to actually iron down the corners of her rug! As for wrinkling, it's probably not a very thick or heavy rug, you might have to ( the iron again!) a rubber type backing

Q:I need a 10' x 6' or 11' x 7' area rug. the rug will be underneath a table and chairs with wheels. lots of traffic in this area. what should I look for? what type of material? who is a good manufacturer of area rugs?what retailer sells good ones?: first of all, are you looking for an heirloom piece? Try oriental rugs or persian rugs. Very costly. Can set you back a couple grand but will increase in value over time. you need to look behind the rug for the quality. You are looking for handstitched and lots of detail, etc. The most important characteristic for me is durability and washability. Some you can put into the washer, others need special cleaners, some are spot clean only. The second characteristic important to me is texture. I like plush soft carpets that you can walk on with your bare feet. Of course, color choice and design are important. (floral? transitional? contemporary?) I like transitional. I'm a fan of Mohawk and Shaw area rugs. You can find them at Home Depot. Reasonable prices for machine made rugs.

Q:Hello, I need to buy a big, squared burgundy rug (or in any dark red for that matter).I want to cover a room thats 16.6 x16.6 ft It would be fine if doesnt to cover the whole room, Im just looking for possibilities. Nothing fancy, its only to cover horrible flooring.Do you know any online stores that would sell them for a low price?BTW, Im willing to buy a used one and my budget is $400. Q:ok my rug burn scar is peeling by itself and the skin under is white should i be worried....will that leave a scar??: As a rule of thumb, rug burns are too shallow to cause scarring. You will probably have some residual redness in the area after it finishes healing, but that is not a scar, and will go away in a few days when replaced by healthy skin tissue. Even if you do get a scar, it will just be flat and the color will fade in a few weeks and it won't be noticeable. It sounds like yours is almost healed, so there's not all that much you can do. Don't scratch it, don't peel away the skin. If it's very itchy you can moisturize.

Q:Wet Basement Rug Mystery: Chris, Look directly above where that rug is or was (overhead) Do you see any kind of a slow leak or evidence of a leak anywhere around there overhead that is dripping down onto the floor? That would be my guess. Good luck
