- Pergo floors are designed to float. That is why a thin slick plastic sheet is installed underneath the flooring. It is also why there is a gap left on all sides of the floor where it meets the walls or baseboard. This arrangement permits the floor to expand and contract with temperature changes and not buckle or separate at the joints. If you place your cabinets on top of the flooring it tends to anchor that portion of the flooring and increase the chances of buckling or separation of the boards. Screwing down the cabinet makes the anchor more substantial and increases the chances of a problem.
- Q: I've received advise to screw the floor with screws and that should stop the squeaks... this was done, but the floor stills squeaks... what is my next option to fix this problem, I am thinking of selling and trying to fix the place up, please help.
- if the floor still squeaks after being screwed down tightly the floor joist is cracked along the length and to fix that you will need to be able to get to the under side of the floor ceiling sheet rock is cheap and easy to replace locate the bad area cut open the ceiling find the bad joist or joists and nail new ones right to the side of the old ones before you slide them into place use liquid nails and glue the top edge to the under side of the floor then you can put the ceiling back in and rest easy knowing it wont ever squeak again

- You shoudl use a clear vct glue under the self stick tiles, they have a tendency to shift and move which will leaves gaps. you can buy the glue at home depot or lowe's. It is made by Henry's and you trowel it out and when it dries clear you stick the tiles it in. make sure you measure and know where you are gonna start.
- Q: My condo is on the 3rd floor & I'm looking to replace the 3/4 white oak floor with 5/8 strand woven bamboo.After removing some of the oak I have found that the sub-floor is a concrete slab (I'm unsure of the thickness) covered by 1/8 of insulayment underlayment. On top of that are two(2) layers of 3/8 plywood screwed to eachother with 3/4 screws. The plywood is not attached to the 1/8 insulayment mat or the concrete slab in any way. So my first question is, is this normal floor construction?My seconod question has to do with the fact that there appears to be green mold between the plywood planks & behind the baseboard. Should I be worried?Thanks in advance. I appreciate any help you can offer.
- As the others have said it is normal construction. We 'float' the floor like that all the time. It's better if you live in a place where the weather changes dramatically. It allows the floor to expand and contract. As for the green stuff...it's probably mold, it's better to treat it, then to take a chance. I don't think it would be efflorescence (stuff that naturally comes out of the concrete), it's usually white. Remove a piece of drywall and see if it's traveled up the studs. Either way- clean it up before laying any flooring.
