- Q: As you can tell my piston rings are worn and I have blue smoke going everywhere. I just switched out the oil and went with a thicker weight and put in some bardahl stop leak additive but after a few start ups the car is still smoking. I was wondering if there was a specific amount of mileage that is needed in order for the additive to flow through the engine to temporarily stop the leak or if there was another brand of additive that‘s better or if additives just don‘t work. I realize that eventually ill have to rebuild the engine but I‘m just trying to buy some time here. Thanks.
- the money you will spend for additives and some trial and error repair, plus the oil to top the level, just save it for engine rebuilding. no additives can fix, weld, build up a broken/worn out piston rings and sleeves/cylinders. and no oil can restore the flexibility of valve seals, cam seals, and crankshaft seals when it starts to leak.
- Q: I bought an 85 Ford F-150 a few weeks ago. The dealer told me it had been sitting a long time. It had an oil leak and the mechanic told me to put this additive in that would make the seals expand. I did it and now I have many leaks! Why is that and what should I do?
- whereever its leaking from you will have to fix or buy a new engine. you basiclly answered your question. as the additive makes the seals expand, its like making a hole bigger and more will come out. most additives are thinner and the additive should have been to seal the leak until you can fix the seals. they are really cheap and you can do it yourself. by sitting a long time, sludge build-up is in the pan and put back in the engine. upper engine sludge means problems and a new engine.

- Well, if you read the fuel additives carefully and follow the instructions carefully and do everything they say, you will get an increase. But you would have got that increase without the additive.just do all the other steps. Cleaning your intake valveswhat does the engine know about clean(or dirty) intake valves? Nothing. It just runs. And in order to have that kind of build up you need to have been putting in low grade gasoline for 10 years with alot of idling and slow speed driving such as farm trucks on the farm to get that kind of build up. The engine still ran fine. Build up? Yeah.had to grind it off the valves. No gas would ever get it off in a couple of tankfuls. So additives are just a drain on the pocket book, but do help(instructionwize) if you drive as they dictate.

- well from what ive learned, Those additives havent been proven to work, unconfirmed reports not lab tested of only 1/2 mpg or less. i have heard that true fuel savings are achieved by proper tire inflation, slowing down so the rpms match the gear ratio and tire rpm. i think the formula is something like engine rpm X gear ratios X tire size X tire rpm divided by 60. ( this might not be right) i am interested to see the correct answer your looking for, im willing to try it and see but nothing ive heard or tried truely works

- From personal experience, Lucas Fuel System Treatment is one of the best products on the market, I experienced a 1.5-2 MPG better average when I was using it, not alot, but with today's gas prices, I feel it's worth it. Kinda spendy, but a quart will treat 10-15 tanks of gas.

- the molasses you buy in the grocery store is a higher grade than the feed grade molasses designed for animals. it might have additives in it. Read the label. If its nothing more than molasses, taste it. Animals love it but they also have different tastes than humans do. 'You are not saving much if you got that stuff cheap but have to add stuff to it to make it taste good.
