- Q:I just purchased a grey sofa. In our living area, it looks green! We have greyish tan walls which we will probably change. The first thing I wanted to look at in our room though is the lighting. In the afternoon when light is coming in, the sofa looks charcoal grey like it is supposed to. This is our den/basement and we have fluorescent lighting. I was wondering what color of lighting should we go with to tone down the green in the grey? I looked online and they have full spectrum, cool white and warm white. Our current bulbs don't say whether they are cool,warm or full spectrum. Thanks!
- Most lighting stores and even Big Box building stores like Home Depot and Lowes have a display with various color temperatures of light bulbs, particularly fluorescents. Can you take a sample of the sofa fabric with you, like the cover to one of the cushions? Bring it and place it under the lighting samples and see which will give you the color you like. I was a lighting consultant and I tend to think a cool white or bright white will be your best bet -- it's in the blue spectrum rather than warmer yellow tones that you'll find in warm white. Even if bulbs don't have a color name on them they should have a 4 digit color temperature number like 4100, 3000 or 3500. You want something 4000 or higher which will be closer to what's called northern sky light. You can get bulbs up to 5000 or 7500 temperature but they will be a bit dimmer than the 4100 bulbs though the color will be truer.

- Siamese are dumb. Trust me, mine will 6 years old, and if he still had claws, the couch would be in ribbons by now. Squirt bottles will only work if your cat hates water. Carpet tape is good training, but depends on the kind of material the furniture is. They make a kind of spray to keep pets away from places you don't want then to be. I never had anything for my cats to sctatch on, but the cardboard kind might do the trick. I had a friend who has a hymalayian (part persian, part siamese) and that cat loves cardboard!
- Q:How far from a sofa should you place a coffee table?
- A lot depends on your living room layout, the people using it and how it's used. If you have a large living room with lots of seating, you'll probably want to position the coffee table closer to the center of the area so everyone in the room has easy acess. Same goes for if your using it mainly as a place door some decorations/magazines to sit on, especially if you have end tables right next to the couch to put drinks/the remote/other things you need easy access too. If you have a smaller space, want to put your feet up or actually need the coffee table for keeping frequently used things within reach, then you should put it close to the couch. About 8-24 is usually a good distance to keep everything nearby but it should be far enough away people aren't bumping their legs on it or it's creating too tight of a squeeze when they're trying to sit down.

- Wipe down the sofa with warm water on a soft rag. Consider washing it with saddle soap. I have only used it on shoes, handbags and boots, so no idea how long this will take. You can find it with shoe police at your local store. Or there may be some type of leather treatment cream that will restore the look of your sofa. As for the dog, consider getting a blanket that stretches all the way across the seat of the sofa, fold it in half lengthwise, and insert long pieces of aluminum foil between the layers. Put this on the sofa. Dogs and cats hate it and will avoid the sofa. It will protect the sofa when you cannot. Be sure to tuck it in firmly around the edges when you are not at home. (It will look fine if you choose a blanket that goes with the decor; try it first with something you have on hand.)
