Q: I am moving into a foreclosure. The carpet is badly stained in some areas. I can't afford to replace all of the carpet. Do you know how to effectively remove stains from carpet? Resolve doesn't work.: The two best products I have found are Greased Lightning and Shout. Try scrubbing the stain with a brush and one of these products, and then rent a carpet cleaner and go over the entire house, concentrating on those stains. Hopefully they'll come up for you!

Q: My daughter is 4 and right now she just has a big piece of loose carpet (not even fitted to the room) over linoleum. We plan on putting in different flooring, and I'm thinking of carpet tiles. Is this a good choice for a kid's room?What are some pros and cons with both carpet and carpet toilet?: Carpet tiles over full carpet. The carpet in my childhood bedroom has silly putty stuck in it, marker stains, nailpolish stains, paint spills, you name it. Carpet tiles are good for young kids because you can REPLACE them. Accidents happen, kids are messy and getting someone to clean your carpet is expensive. This also gives you the option to change the flooring when your daughter gets older if she wants something different. Picking up carpet tiles is cheaper then hiring someone to take out old carpet and install new.

Q: is it okay to wash rugs in the washing machine? it won't damage it, or cause damage to future loads?: yes if it fits and was inexpensive. don't do it if it was an expensive pile rug, oriental, or if you have contrasting colors- red and cream, black and white, etc. don't dry them in the dryer though.

Q: I just bought an area rug from Home Depot. It is wool with a fabric backing and they have used a glue that I have had problems with on other rugs. It smells so bad, that is all I can smell when I walk into that room. I smelled the sample piece when I ordered it and it didn't smell. I have gotten rid of other rugs in the past that never lost the smell. Now What?: Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) is great for absorbing odours. Sprinkle on the rug (the reverse as well as the front if necessary) leave for a couple of hours and vacuum off. You can also put a few drops of your favourite essential oil onto the rug to freshen up the smell. Also, as daft as it sounds, to get rid of chemical smells from the room itself such as glue, paint etc peel an onion, chop it in half and cover it with water, leave it in the room overnight and it will absorb the smell (don't ask me why this works but it does!) Q: My walls are painted light gray, I am looking to replace my carpet. Which color matches well with light gray. I had a light blue carpet. Should i get the same color: Take a color chip of the paint with you when you pick carpet. Some greys have undertones of yellow or brown that would work with carpets with those colors in them. Other grey paints work with blue/green or are neutral enough that any color carpet would work with them. We are redoing a bedroom currently inhabited by 2 young adult males. I wanted to lay down a ebony laminate floor (almost black) but was advised that it would show every spec of dirt, dust, cat hair, and scratches would be more noticeable. So I will probably go with Cherry, which is more in line with the flooring in the rest of our house. You can always change the color of your walls, which is cheaper than carpet.
