- Q: I recently moved into my first apartment and its pretty nice except for the carpet in the living room. Its a kight green color and it's just full if stains. I would love to just put a new carpet in but thats not really practical because I'm just renting the place. It waould cost stanley steamers about $100 to clean it but this carpet is really old and stained. Would it even be worth that? I'm afraid I'm gonna spend the money and it's still gonna look gross
- As a professional carpet cleaner this comes up a lot. Our policy is we will try a spot/stain or two (usually the worst) to give you an idea of what the carpet will turn out like. If you don't think it will turn out the way you like that's it we leave. No reputable carpet cleaner will guarantee a spot or stain will come out until they try, because they can't tell for sure until they try. A carpet cleaner can tell if some stains are likely to come out but cannot guarantee it. As an incentive to get your lanlord to pay for the carpet cleaning you can point out carpet cleaning is tax deductable for a landlord.(which is why mony landlords ask you for the reciept, for their files of course, if you get the carpets clean) but thats another story

- An empty place the carpet can be done , ripped out and replaced in a day with a 2 man crew. A one person operation may take 2 days. That you can find out when you schedule the job. With rip out , disposal, new carpet and installation, your looking at 3000$ ( +- of course) . This is based on the 1000 s/f you say. This may not be all carpet.. - Go to a good hardware store and tell the salesman what you want. There is a tape now that holds down loose rugs -on all sorts of surfaces. No, it won't get mildew.

I don't care about having the best as I am carpeting my first home and won't be here forever. I also cannot find objective reviews on carpet brands. Why is this? I am starting to realize that the carpet industry is a very competitive business and how do I know that I am getting a quality product.
- rob has a good answer, also check around with friends and family, what they have bought, what they recomend for wear and cleaning, because they have lived with thier carpet for how long.... also don't forget about industrial carpet, you can get some really nice ones these days and they are Very hardwearing and can be quite beautiful. also don't forget the underlay, this is where the quality is not seen but felt!

- Trying to clean it with soup will make the stains even worse, especially fish soup will leave a bad smell behind. Try using soap instead, it might work wonders. ;)
