- Q: I purchased an old wool, floral patterned, pile area rug (approx. 8' x 10') at an auction. It needs cleaned and there is not a professional cleaner in my area. Can I clean it with a traditional steam cleaner using cold water? If so, what about the beater bar? Do I need to diconnect that so I don't fuzz the wool? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
- Since you don't have a cleaning service in your area;I would recomend taking it to laundry mat that has commerical washers and add 1/2 cup woolite and wash on the lowest setting and then take home and place over railing or flat surface and let air dry. I do this with my Oriental area rugs. If a laundry mat is unavailable; use the recomendation above in your bath tub; squeezing gently after your drain tub and then palce over railing or place on flat surface.

- Sure! Go for it. What color is the carpet and how high/low is the pile? It helps when the carpet is low pile and neutral. But if it isn't, the more you can cover it with a large rug the better. But consider what oneman says as well.

- A rug won't help. Best remedy is about an hour every few days with a shedding blade. You should take the rug off unless it's very cold. Especially if it's with other horses, it doesn't need a rug. My mare has never worn a rug in her life, and she only has two pasture mates. The way horses mostly shed is the hair comes off a little a first, then a whole lot. The more you groom, the faster and heavier the shedding.

- I love it! You have great taste. I'd go will some soft silk drapes that gently flow and maybe puddle on the floor in a cream, gray or tan, with a contrasting colored tassel to hold them back. If you want a printed drape, I'd still go silk and stick with a contemporary pattern. Rug options are limitless. When shopping for a rug, try to pull out a color in your other items. I find it is striking to have that be a small almost unnoticeable color in the rug, but it will pop because it is in another item. For example a printed rug that is predominantly brown, but has little hints of purple in it. Alone you might not notice the purple in the rug, but the pillows make it pop out. I'd go with abstract art given the contemporary nature of the couch... maybe a canvas giclee.

- This may seem unorthodox, but try placing some of the cat's favorite food near its bathroom. A cat's personality will prevent it from urinating or defecating near the food.
