- I've had to repair construction damaged carpet in several houses - here's how I went at it. Go to a carpet store and ask for carpet tape - a wide version of duct tape. You should be able to get it as single sided or double sided tape. Take a piece of carpeting identical to the carpeting you have to replace, cut it large enough to replace the damaged section, and lay the new piece over the old - making sure the pile of the original carpet and the patch line up. You may find it easiest to cut the carpeting from the back side, or use a knife with a blade designed to cut carpeting (see the carpet store again). Hold the patch in place while you cut through damaged carpet, using the patch as a template. If you're uncertain, make the hole in the original carpet a little small and trim the patch to fit. Once the patch fits the hole in the original carpet, use the tape to fasten the patch to the original carpet (and to the floor if two sided). Get the cat de-clawed. ;-) Good luck with it.

- The only thing you can do is cut in a new piece. My brother and I do flooring on the weekends. We have done this repair many times. You have to have the right equipment to do it right. (hot iron and seam tape) If the carpet is fairly old, you can also cut out the burn if it is small and re-seam at the cut. This is also done with a hot iron and seam tape.

- Q: Besides vacuuming, how do you maintain white carpeting? Personally I have found that using a storebought steamer makes my carpets look dingier. A person I knew at one time told me about a dry cleaning method using some kind of powder. She told me she rented the equipment and it only cost about thirty dollars. I've researched this and don't have any idea where to go. Links to more info. would be helpful.

- Burning carpet and just about any burning material puts off deadly poisonious gases. If caught in a building they may disorient you to the point that you can not escape and you will die.

- Good heavens, that's strange. Did you buy this carpet yourself, or was it already there? Do you know what the material is? I have lived in five houses with wall-to-wall carpeting and have never, ever seen that. If you can't find out what the material is on the phone, then take a piece of it to Home Depot or a specialty carpeting store or someplace like that and get some help. If you have major problems with this, I would call your local television news station and get them interested in a faulty product story. This might pressure the carpeting manufacturer to pay some attention to your issue. One final note though: whoever owned the carpet before you might have applied some kind of product to the carpet which is causing its detioration. Good luck.
- Q: Does anyone know of a carpet steamer that leaves little or no detergent residue? I want to buy a steamer, but have been warned that most have the usual problem of leaving too much residue that makes carpets easier to soil.
- I've heard that it's NOT the carpet steamer that's leaving the residue it's using too much or not the right kind of shampoo... Most people think MORE is BETTER but, that's NOT the case with carpet steamers... What happens is all the soap doesn't get picked up and eventually it dries and settles into the carpet where it attracts even more dirt particles.. So, if you use a carpet steamer cleaner just go easy on the soap and/or rinse with clean, clear no-soap water... Good luck

- Blot the area with a clean, white cloth to absorb all the liquid you can. Blot from the outside of the stain in to avoid spreading the stain. Mix 1 teaspoon clear, mild liquid dish washing detergent with 1 cup lukewarm water. Sponge the area with the detergent solution. Blot again with a clean, white cloth. Mix 1/3 cup white vinegar with 2/3 cup lukewarm water. Sponge the area with the vinegar solution. Blot with a clean, white cloth. Sponge the area with clean water. Blot with a clean, white cloth.
