If you're unable to rip out the old installation, I doubt that installing new carpet would be a good idea, since even a single room's worth of carpeting is very heavy, and installing it, even as loose-lay over existing flooring would require moving all of the furniture out of the room. If you're going to go that far, you should probably just hire someone to rip out the old carpet, install the new, and do it properly.

- Q: How do I fix this? Vacuuming only helps a little. The carpet is mushed from being stepped on all year in some areas, and other areas it looks like it did when we bought it. This makes the mushed area very noticeable. It is a lighter color than the carpet was originally.
- The problem you have is caused by low density -- carpet weight is the ounces a square yard weighs not counting the backing, so 18 ounce carpet weighs 18 ounces per sq yd without backing, etc. Most homes are built by price driven builders, so the weight is low. To make it look more plush, these builders specify long nap carpet, and the combination of long nap plus low weight means the fibers aren't close together to offer mutual support. You can steam the carpet (there's a small steam machine available for about 12 dollars) and while still damp and soft, you can brush it with a regular hairbrush to help restore the carpet to a less crushed condition. This problem is especially noticeable at the front edge of stair treads. Best fix is more expensive carpet, but steam and brush helps as long as you keep doing it.

I saved a remnant when they installed the carpet and had somebody splice it in but it still didn't look right. Actually the maintenance guys there might know just the trick. But most of the time people don't get their deposit back unless it's in better condition than when you moved in (if documented on move in) was my experience. You could call or see a professional cleaning or janitorial service and ask if they could help you out with some tips and some types of dyes to use. You could buy a carpet sample that is similar for a buck or two and experiment on it, buy a couple fabric dyes but don't make it worse than it already is. This has huge potential for disaster so be super careful, a professional would be better.
