- Q: why are ball bearings used to reduce friction?
- The reason that ball bearings are used is because it reduces the surface area of contact between two items. The ball also rolls easily as opposed to a flat needle-bearing. You will notice that a ball bearing generally utilizes either a grease or oil to reduce friction in cooperation with the naturally low resistance of the ball bearing, hence providing a overall low friction, low resistance way or turning around a shaft.

- Q: I refer to the overhung impeller pump. They normally have two bearings supporting the shaft, (and an oil box between the bearings). Why is that? why not only one bearing? what would happen if they are manufactured with one bearing only?
- This is a rough guess by an electrician. There is a lot of radial pressure on the shaft of a rotary pump. Were pumps to have only one bearing, the bearing would have a lot more pressure on one side of the race than on the other. This would cause the bearing to fail. With two bearings, set some inches apart, the radial pressure on the races would be small.

- bones makes many types of bearings. Some are ABEC rated and the better ones are not. The ABEC rating is for vibration in high speed machines that run at speeds similar to skating over 200 mph. They are not the best design for skating but companies make a lot of them for other reasons and it is cheaper to get them than a design that is custom made. Bones, Twin Cam, Zero Drag, and some other companies have custom designs for their better bearings.

- I use Bones Swiss bearings and they have been very responsive and have made a big difference. If you want to know how fast a bearing is most have abec ratings, nine being the highest. However, as Bones Swiss are of better quality and faster than most bearings, they have omitted the abec rating. I highly reccommend the Bones Swiss bearings and if you want to get better than those, you get the ceramics. They are much more expensive though.

- Did you have the crank turned when you had it out? If you turn the crank, mill, cut, to make it smooth again then you will need oversize bearings to make it tight in the new bearings.

- I'm not personally familiar with the brand, but that depends on a lot of factors. Everyone's preferences are different. I like reverse pivot trucks, which seem to be on the Karvstix. I'm not seeing info. on the wheels and bearings. If you're new to longboarding, I would ride it as is and see what you think of it. If there's something that doesn't feel right, then swap it out.

- You only need to clean the bearings if they don't roll well, don't roll smoothly, or make rough noises. ABEC is meaningless for skates in that there is almost no difference between ABEC 1 and 7. The rating is based on vibration that would be at speeds above 200 mph. The brand is much more important and some of the better ones (Bones, Zero Drag, Twin Cam) make bearings that don't meet any of the ABEC standards because they can roll better with more gaps in the right places. Your choice of wheels will make a bigger difference in your speed than your bearings.

- You don't need to ask the same question in three areas, two of which aren't appropriate. Are you asking how to take the bearings out of the wheel to replace them or how to open them up to clean or oil them? Unlike a couple of people have said, inline skate bearings are NOT sealed. Sealed bearings have way too much drag for inline skate or skateboard use. The method of removing from the wheel that one of them posted is just as wrong. Please clarify your question. If you want to remove them from the wheel, are the axles 6mm (1/4) or 8mm (5/16)? If you want to open them up, do the shields have a rubbery surface or metal surface? If they have a metal surface, are there a row of visible notches around the outside of the shield? Then I can tell you what you need.
