- It depends more on the brand than the ABEC rating. ABEC is almost meaningless for skates or boards because it is about vibrations that would happen around 200 mph. Early skates and boards came with precision bearings that are (in spite of their grade name) really poor and sloppy. ABEC 1 bearings were a massive improvement but the differences between ABEC 1 and ABEC 7 is extremely small and the smaller tolerances in ABEC 7 can make them go slower. A number of high end companies have designs that violate the ABEC standards but are better for skates and boards by letting the bearings roll easier and be more durable. Zero Drag, Bones, and Twin Cam all sell ABEC rated bearing but their better ones are not ABEC.

- Yes they'd work, but not cost effective. Ball bearings already have very low friction. It's not worth the cost and compexity to go from maybe 2% friction to zero. You may even lose as it takes some energy to constantly pump up the bearings.

- They are probably 1/4 or 5/32 diameter balls, but the rest of your question leaves me wondering. The hubs that your bike has are quite OK for the grade of bike you have, and just replacing the bearings will have no effect- or if anything a negative effect- on the operation of the hub. Keep in mind that the bearings run on cups pressed into the hub and on cones that are threaded onto the axle, so replacing bearings on a new bike without upgrading these items is useless. By the way, my guess is that the cups and cones can't be upgraded. I suggest that you leave what seems to be a brand new bike alone and stop trying to improve on something that doesn't need it. If you have some problems, see you dealer and explain it to them- chances are any adjustments will be free (or cheap).

- Q: I currently own a 2009 Lightning Long SS, it has just a bit over 5000 miles on it. I was riding it down the freeway the other day and the rear end started to wag around and progressively get worse. When I got it to the shop I looked at the rear wheel and the bearings on the right side where the belt is were ground up and gone, just metal shavings. - It sounds like the pre-load on the bearing was wrong. In between the bearings there is a spacer that sets the load on the bearings. It sounds like it's wrong. Or it could have just been a bad bearing. It does happen. I'm amazed it didn't chew the belt up and break it. I'd check the belt very carefully to make sure the teeth aren't chewed up or missing. Changing a belt is an expensive repair due to the amount of tear down to replace it. Make sure the belt is good before you put it back on the road.
