Q: I need to wire a single 120v outlet from the 240v volt wire I use on my compressor. Im installing a 120v electric automatic drain valve on my large shop air compressor. The compressor is wired up with SJ00W 10-AWG, 4-wire power cable (red,green,black white wires). and is rated at 240v @ 15-amp(compressor not wire). The drain valve uses a normal house hold current wiring config. (black,white and open copper)The 240v power supply is the only supply I have near by, (two of them actually) Or I would just wire the automatic valve off an outlet and call it a day. So How do I wire a 120v 3-wire set up from the 240v 4-wire supply? Thanks: I swear these people on here are crazy sometimes. People he was never asking how to wire e recepticale. He is asking how to take a four wire 240vac connection to a 3 wire 120vac connection. He is wiring it to a auto drain valve that has a termination box on the side of it or a pecker head as we used to call it. Here is how to do it. Go to your breaker panel determine wick breaker is feeding the cable/wire your wanting to use. Once you have done this remove the breaker panel cover. Then remove the wires from the breaker. These should be the red and black wires. Now remove the two pole breaker and replace it with two single pole breakers rated at 20 amps. Using black electrical tape, tape the end of the red wire up and secure it inside the breaker panel so that it is out of the way. Now land the black wire to one of the breakers you just installed. The second breaker will not have anything wired to it, it is a spare to be used later but must be installed to cover the hole left by the two pole breaker. Label you panel to indicate the auto drain valve and the spare breaker you have just installed. Now at the auto drain valve the black will be the hot/L1 white is neutral/L2 and the green is ground. The red can be taped up and secured out of the way or cut back and taped up if you don't think you will need it in the future.

Q: I attempted to change a bathroom fan to a new one with the help of a friend. He disconnected all the wiring without paying attention to what he was doing and what was wired where. We have a set of wires coming from somewhere (I presume the fuse box) to the fan that is hot regardless of the switch being on or off. That has a black, white and naked wire in it. Then we have another wire that comes from the switch that has black, white and naked as well. The fan has black, white and green. Can someone please tell me how to connect these as we have tried everything and the only thing that works is wired to the constant hot which of course won't allow us to turn the fan off with the switch...: You need to pull your wall switch to see how it is wired. I suspect the original wiring used the black and white on the switch itself which would make the white actually black or hot instead of neutral. If on one side of the wall switch the black wire is wired and the other the white then you need to wire the black from the fuse panel to the black going to the switch. Then the white coming from the switch to the black on the fan. The white on the fuse panel wire would be wired to the white from the fan and all grounds(bare and green) wire together.

The fan has 2 wires and there are 2 wires sticking out of the wall.How do I know which wire connects to which wire?What would happen if I connect the wrong wires?: Of the two incoming wires, one should be white (neutral) and one should be black (hot or power). The bath fan should have a neutral and hot also. A wiring diagram can usually be found on the fan unit if a manual is not available. Simply wire the white/neutral to the neutral wire of the fan and do likewise for the hot wire. For safety modern fans make accommodations for the attachment of a ground wire. This provides a path to ground should there be a short in the unit. Hopefully there is a third wire from the wall that will provide a ground. It is usually bare and should be attached to the fan using a green ground screw. Older homes did not have the third ground wire but unless your home is from the fifties, you should have three wires. (If your electrical outlets accommodate three prong plugs, you have grounded wiring). If your bath fan is relatively inaccessible (on the ceiling) not having it grounded might not be that big of an issue but it is always better to ground the bath fan frame when possible. Again, if you have or can locate the manufacturers wiring diagram it should be followed.
