- Q: I bought a single pole dimmer switch to install in my dining room and when I took the old switch out nothing looked right. There are two wires which were joined together by another single wire which was attached to the top screw. There was another single wire (I believe the ground wire) attached to the bottom screw. I disconnected the first two wires and attached them separately to the black wires on the dimmer and attached the ground wires together. It didn't work. I've tired several different times with no luck. I put the wires back the way they were and attached them to the old switch and they no longer work ether. Help! How can I fix this problem? The old wires appear to be a very thick copper covered in black plastic and cloth.....
- The 'answerer' Justin K thinks you have knob and tube wiring. A lot of early electrical installations were done in the old days with out a ground, many types of early 'romex' did not include a ground. You may or may not have 'knob and tube' wiring - but it really dose not matter. The two wires which were joined together and had a third wire attached are the hot wires. The other wire (lower screw terminal) is the 'load' wire - it goes out to your light fixture. The reason the those 2 wires were attached together is that one of them is hot, and the other wire is a 'feed' to supply power to your next switch or receptacle. I am an electrical contractor, this is how I would fix the problem - I'm not suggesting that you do it though. #1 turn the breaker/fuse back on. #2 use a voltage tester to determine which wire is now hot. #3 touch the hot wire to the other wires 1 at a time. The hot wire when it is touching the 'load' wire will turn on the lighting fixture. Mark the 'load' wire with some black electrical tape. #4 turn the power back off #5 attach the marked 'load' wire to one of the switch terminals. #6 take the other 2 wires (incoming power, and the out going power) and join them together with a third wire ---LIKE IT WAS ORIGINALLY. Place that third onto the other terminal of the switch. it dose not mater which terminals you use - it will work just fine.
- Q: to which wire in the back of my car radio do i hook my remote wire to from my amplifier?
- I also have a 2006 Toyota Corolla CE with an computerized transmission. If I force it somewhat confusing the worst gas mileage i'm getting is 32 mpg. the utmost i are becoming so a ways became 40mpg in a mixture of 75% city/25% highway making use of. To get that 40mpg i became hypermiling without doing something unlawful or fairly risky (like drafting semi automobiles). On customary although my gas mileage is usually 36mpg. The hypermiling I did... No velocity above fifty 5 mph. Manually cycle the A/C. flow away it off until i could no longer take it anymore then turn it decrease back on for 5 - 10 min. Coast right down to purple lights to make a green. Racing to a purple easy (as many drivers do) is pointless and wastes gas. No rapid acceleration. Coast right down to end signs and indications attempting to time it so i'm next. If no longer a minimum of i did no longer could wait diverse turns to be first in my lane. With wintry climate drawing close i'm going to attempt yet another around of hypermiling and notice if i can get extra advantageous than 40mpg. :)
- Q: I'm faced with a dilemma...I'm wiring my basement right now and all is fine, except for my living room. I want to have a 3-way switch setup, but with four light fixtures. I've already ran 3+ground wires in this order...Breaker box - Switch A - Fixture 1 - Fix. 2 - Fix. 3 - Fix. 4 - Switch B. I have done regular 3-way switches in the past, without much trouble, but I have no idea how to wire this, so well-explained instructions would be perfect. Thanks so much!
- A normal three way has two wires switch to switch and one wire from each switch to the single light. All you have to do is wire the lights in parallel, Each wire will go to one side of all three lights. The light to light wiring is no different then any other multiple light on one switch wiring. Except in this situation the two wires are coming from two different switches.
- Q: i know nothing about wire. thanks. :|
- Solder wire has a lower melting point, allowing you to melt it onto something else. In it's wire form, it will also snap very easily. (not good for fastening things together). Mechanical wire (I'm assuming electrical wire), is designed to withstand high temperatures (and hence, electrical currents), and are usually be bent much more. It's also usually sheilded in rubber (e.g. electrical cords, computer cables, coxial (tv) cable, etc).

- For the best answers, search on this site https://shorturl.im/avvlm hooking up stereos is hard, sometimes the cables dont even match colors, and you need a tester to see which is gain and which is ground.
- Q: I've been asking questions to my mom about what is inside the new receiver and then suddenly i asked my mom, what is inside a wire? She didn't know what was inside a wire so i asked if i can post my question on yahoo answers, and then she said yes so i did it.
- thers different types, under the rubber/plastic insulation thers usually copper, but thers also aluminum, thers #1 and #2 copper wire, one is thick 2 is small, ther can be solid or a bunch of thin ones wrapped in a spiral, in the spiral the electricity only uses the outside wires, pretty neat...but fiber optic is glass, they are coved by a main rubber insulation then ther's all the small wires inside wich is also insulated, if you take that off then thers one more tiny layer covering the glas you have to scrape off to actully see the glass, wich hurts worse than a cactus if it gets in your skin, not fun...wires can be very tiny and can be very large, i have samples of wire as thick as a golf ball, very heavy, you have to use a electric wench system to pull it
- Q: Why is thin strand wire better for powering car audio?
- Thin strand wire is more flexible and so stands up to the flexing and vibration in a car application better. May not be an issue in the short term, but over time the thinner strand should hold up better
- Q: we need to know if we don't connect the red wire and just cap it off.
- Well, is there a red wire in the fan to connect it to? If not, then you should probably ground it. If it's an older house, you should call an electrician to test it and make sure. You wouldn't want to risk hooking up the wrong things.
