Q:i want to grease my bearings but i have no idea how to take them out... and i do want to break them or ruin them...how do i do it???
push it with a screw driver
Q:Hi, I have a problem with replacing the bearings on my bike, the ones I took out weren't tapered, and all the ones I have found on the internet are tapered. Was just wondering if anyone knows of any good parts websites that would probably sell old style bearings. Thanks, Kim :)
The reason for this is that EVERYBODY replaces old ball and race bearings with tapered bearings, even on my antiques, as they are far superior, last longer, and require little or no maintenance.
Q:why are ball bearings used to reduce friction?
The reason that ball bearings are used is because it reduces the surface area of contact between two items. The ball also rolls easily as opposed to a flat needle-bearing. You will notice that a ball bearing generally utilizes either a grease or oil to reduce friction in cooperation with the naturally low resistance of the ball bearing, hence providing a overall low friction, low resistance way or turning around a shaft.
Q:I just took my car to the shop and found out that the carrier bearing is going out on my car, I need a new one. I was told that the only way to get one is off a salvage car or to buy a new drive shaft because Ford does not sell this part seperate. This has been a huge problem with the Ford Fusions and like it such as the Milan. So my question is, has any of you had this problem and found this part somewhere other than buying a new drive shaft?
From Ford buying a new carrier might mean buying a driveshaft with it if they know it's an issue and they think the driveshaft is causing it. I really don't know. The bearings might be available from an auto parts store by themselves. You can get used carrier assemblies with the bearings in them from a salvage yard or Ebay. The carriers fit multiple popular Ford vehicles so they're everywhere. Call around and ask. BTW it's a little odd that a 2008 vehicle would need axle carrier bearings already. That's not a part that fails with any frequency at all. Unless you put on about 200k miles or drive it hard I wouldn't expect them to go bad. I'd file a complaint with safercar just to cover yourself since if they were to lock up or toss the driveshaft it could cause an accident. You can call Ford(main headquarters) directly and tell them it's unusual for this to happen and see if they'll pay for all or part of the repair.
Q:what are the odds of 07yukon front wheel bearing going at 87k milesi hear a minor humming that i do not believe is the tires, based on the soundit is a 4 wheel drive model, not AWD
you cant really go off miles in some cases. 87k miles is plenty of time to wear out a bearing depending on how it has been driven for those 87k miles. I ruined both front wheel bearings just driving through some deep water once and only had 2k miles on it. the harder you are on it, (bigger wheels/tires than what the factory recommends, off road driving, 87k miles of a speed demon) - will wear just about out any wheel bearing prematurely.
Q:How can we reduce friction by using ball bearings?
They are balls and because of their shape, they create less friction than something that is flat or has edges. Edges tend to dig in or scrape against other edges. The roundness of ball bearings allows them to roll with the objects.
Q:i have repaired the wheel bearings (outer) how do i do the inners?
First, need more info on type of vehicle, for this may help!
Q:I need to change/ repack the wheel bearings but i've never done it before but I am mechanically inclined enough to do it. Just need to know if theres any secret steps to follow. Any info would be great!!!
not hard, just get some grease in your palm and push the bearing into it. you just want to make sure the grease goes through the cage.
Q:Was recently told by a friend that my front two wheel bearings needed replaced (actually, that the wiring for them was pulled right out of them - which in an 99 Alero requires replacing the entire system) after an ABS light had been on for quite awhile in my car. Furthermore, he suggested that I also needed to replace a pigtail in my car - though I do not know what that is (anyone know?). He quoted me a $750 price tag on the deal and being our friend, we assume that we are getting some sort of labor deal as well - but checking it out we found some sort of pigtail online but it was only $10. With $190 for each wheel bearing that should add up to only $390 + tax so we were a little confused. Can anyone explain what/how much a pigtail is actually worth and what would be a right price on this fix with without labor? I realize prices are slightly different all over the world - so if it helps, this is in Ohio in the States. Much appreciative!!!
A pig tail is a connection to something. I reccommend if you can get it there, a dealer. Get an estimate first. They have to keep the car drivable if you can't afford it. They also have the special tools needed , and the know how. They should be able to tell you whats what so you can understand it too.
Q:I have a 2001 BMW 325i. I believe that we need to change the wheel bearing (passenger rear). You can check my other questions in case the diagnosis is incorrect...(help??)Does anyone have any diagrams, instructions on how to change them? Is it necessary to have them pressed on/off? (that would determine if I could do this at home or not. Please help, this is my sons car and he is in the military and doesn't have time or cash to spend on it. So mom dad are trying to help them out. Any advice or websites will be appreciated. Thanks, stormphyre
HI Yes a rear bearing is pressed on to the axle.. are you sure its a bearing.. I can't see a 8 year old BMW having that kind of problem. those usually last for years and years.. unless run with out oil.. good luck tim
