- Some people mistakenly call shields as seals. No one actually uses seals on skates or boards, they create too much drag. If the drag wasn't there, they would be great since they would actually keep water out. It doesn't matter if you get bearings with metal shields or the neoprene coated ones (more likely to be mistakenly called seals. The neoprene ones are all removable for cleaning and lubricating. Most metal shields are removable but occasionally you find non serviceable bearings that have shields that are permanently staked in place. With some work, you can remove the shields on non serviceable bearings by destroying one of them. You only need one shield that is the side of the bearing you see from the outside.

Longboarding can be divided into two sub-categories, that is downhill riding and free riding. Now each type of riding has different sets of parts which differ from each other to provide maximum performance for the style of riding. Downhill boards are usually at top performance with trucks that have a 42 degree base plate. You will sacrifice the maneuverability and carving ability of trucks with 50 degree base plates to sturdiness if you get 42's. However, you will be able to handle speed much better on 42's and the risk of 'speed-wobbles' will go down. Bushings are pretty difficult to choose. With all different hardnesses and shapes, it's hard to recommend anything that you will be satisfied with. Bearings are simple. Any bearings are basically the same but MAKE SURE you get completely sealed bearings. Ceramic bearings are pricey but supposedly improve performance. I recommend you look into Randall or Paris for trucks (180mm standard), Khiro for bushings (unnecessary), and Bones for bearings.

- Last time I checked it was ABEC7 bearings. Shows how long its been since I have bought bearings. Honestly, the brand doesn't matter. ABEC 7s were what thrilled me the last time I had to buy bearings, I have heard of ABEC 9s but don't care to find out because my stick rolls just fine on ABEC 7s.

- The 96' has regular taper bearings but it matters when getting the bearing you have to specify if your Ranger has the Dana35 or the Dana28 axle. NOTE: The 00' Ranger does have the Hub assembly style bearings.

- If your bearings are dented, there is nothing that can be done about it. Either suffer with the wiggling until the bearings fail, or replace them.
