- Q: We took our 1996 ford aerostar van into the mechanic the other day and he said it needs new wheel bearings on the front left tire and something like the axle assembly done, he said the housing was cracked right open on both sides and they need to be replaced and he said all up it would cost $1200, seems like alot of money, I know its not a great explanation but if you no wat parts im talking about, do you think this price is right? - Seems an average cost. Driveshafts are not cheap and bearings have to be pressed into place. There would be a significant labour charge too.

- As the myth goes, back in the good-ol' days shady mechanics would sell unnecessary work to customers as an additional profit center, including the service/repair/replacement of made-up parts such as muffler bearings, blinker fluid and the ever-popular spark plug oil. None of these things of course, exist. So yes, your friend is having you on. I suggest you take it and run with it. Do a whole report on the history, design, safety features and of course servicing of the oh-so-important exhaust bearing, including how to diagnose and repair problems. Then impress your friend with the amount of work you put into your first homework assignment. Be very serious about it - make him think HE'S STUPID for not knowing what an exhaust bearing is. Then spring the punchline.

- My favorite trucks are krux. I've been skating for 3 years and I have had my krux for about 6 months and I've grinded the **** out of them and they work great. Don't buy cores I broke a pair in a day. Krux have a version of trucks with a kingpin that you tighten with an allen key so as to prevent it from catching on ledges. The best bearings I've had were bones swiss ceramics but they're expensive. for the price, go with bones redz.

- The grease you use will depend on where you live and the temperatures you reach. Hot climates will be good for most any grease. Wet areas you need waterproof grease. Shops in cold weather generally use synthetic to prevent the grease from getting too stiff. For general purpose use I have always sworn by Phil Wood waterproof grease. It's durable, blue (so when it turns black it's time to change it), and cost effective. For seatposts and stems I use white lithium grease. It has anti-corrosive properties and is available at any car parts store. Plus, when it turns from white to black, it's time to change it. On these components a little goes a long way.
- Q: I have a Myrtle Longboard with Sector 9 wheels...right now my wheels spin for about 30 sec...how long would it spin approximately with bones reds?
- Free spin doesn't mean anything. You don't need new bearings unless yours are broken or rusted/seized. They won't make any difference. My Bones Reds spin for about 5 seconds.
