Q: Can cement tiles be directly on the cement board? What material is good?
Cement board is a cement as the main raw material processing and production of a building plate, is a between the gypsum board and stone, free cutting, drilling, carving of the building products, with its superior to gypsum board, wood fire , Waterproof, anti-corrosion, pest control, sound insulation and far lower than the price of stone and become the construction industry widely used in building materials. The cement board is prefabricated and also cast.
Q: Hi, I have an outside breezeway that connects from my house to my garage with a roof and cement slab. I'm in the process of closing it in and making it part of my house(fully heated). I'm going to tile the floor but I'm not going to have a sub floor to insulate under it, I worry about moisture, cold floor and cracking of tiles (I live in Michigan). So my question is I'm not sure on how to go about this, I was thinking a 1/4 to 3/8 insulation rolled on the slab, then cement board and then thermostat controlled heating mat then tile, What do you think, thanks.
I agree with William, use a rigid insulation rather than a roll insulation. It would be pretty much impervious to moisture. A roll insulation would eventually hold any moisture and get moldy and lose any r-value.
Q: can i put ceramic tile on laun board in kitchen and will it stick ok?
You can do anything. But you should not do this. Use wonder board for tile. Dur Rock. Cement board. Whatever you want to call it. I can tell you 100's of horror stories from people who didn't do this. Your job will look great maybe a year if you don't then the inevitable cracks, shifts and unevenness will appear. You need a firm hard thick solid surface for tile.
Q: how to install cement backer board behind a bath tub?
you have to pull the tub out, that is disconnect the plumbing - drain - move the tub from the wall and then put in the backer board and then slide the tub back into position and rehook up the drain. Hopefully the drain will move over a half inch to realign again. Otherwise, why behind the tub? You need backer board behind the tile - there is no tile behind the tub. So cut the drywall out that is there now on the wall above the tub and replace it with backer board. Now it is tileable Much simpler, faster and same results.
Q: nothing to add...
Sure. It may react a little differently because of the moisture absorbing properties of the cement board. Try some tests and experiment with moistening the cement board before applying the texture.
Q: I am installing a new tub and enclosure. I have exposed everything down to the studs and plumbing. I have heard that when installing backer board in a shower the best material to use nowadays is cement backer board (like Durock) since they are more resistant to mold than green board. Anyways, what is the correct process for installing cement backer board in a shower? Do I just screw the boards right into the studs, or do I have to first put down another thin barrier sheet (like some waterproof material), then the cement backer board, then another waterproof sealant, then I can install the enclosure? I just want to do this right the first time and not leave any steps out of the process. I would hate to develop another moisture leak and then find out that my barrier did not hold up well. Thanks and take care, I appreciate any help.
I normally install green board to the studs tape the seams and the corners and then install the wonder board over the green board. This gives a float look and a full one inch barrier. it also brings the wonder board out far enough so I can drop over the lip edge. I space the wonder board 1/8 to 1/4 from bottom I silicone seal the bottom edge to the tub/shower pan I silicone seal the outside edge to the wall and the bottom edge to the floor. I run a thin bead from the bottom of both corners maybe 12 inches up. I use proper screws ( rock on ) and plenty of them. then tile I would never use an enclosure as the wear with time and look cheap. the seams are problematic and tend to leak over time and might be the source of your problem good luck
Q: how can you tell the difference between asbestos and cement board?
The real answer is you cannot unless it is labeled. They recommend you get a sample and send it off to be tested. Because asbestos was added to wall board for fire proofing, it may feel lighter and warmer to the touch than regular cement board. All asbestos products after 1980 were banned. Most of the cases you have heard, involve people who were exposed to levels above the 1940 safety limit. As the product breaks down with age, it starts to release fibers. If it remains buried, that is not a problem.
Q: Paste and Advantages of Cement Pressure Plate
Advantages: fiber cement pressure plate as a new environmentally friendly building materials, in addition to the function of the traditional gypsum board, but also has excellent fire performance and moisture resistance, long life advantages, a large number of industrial and commercial applications in the ceiling ceiling and partition, home decoration , Furniture liner, billboard liner, ship compartment board, warehouse floor, network floor and tunnel and other indoor works of the wall.
Q: or can i leave the seams alone? if i have to tape them what tape do i need and what compound do i need? thanks for any help!
There's no need to tape the seams of cement board, as long as you get a good close fit it should be ok. You've made a wise choice using cement board, at least on the lower half of the shower enclosure area, greenboard, while being somewhat moisture resistant is not impervious to water damage. It should be used above the cement board and will do a good job there. The seams in it will need to be taped, at least above the top edge of the surround.
Q: I'm getting my bathroom shower tile installed and was told to get 4 sheets 1/2 thick backerboard with screws and I need to know if there is a difference between Cement Board and Backer Board?
Same thing. Backer board is a general term. Backer board can be 1/4 thick. can be a wood substrate used for tile is certain circumstances ( not yours), it can be the Hardi board which is a cementrous type board. Basically a backer board any thing that goes under any tile . You should get the cement board for your application. And if your doing a shower and he/she didn t suggest it, a vapor barrier is also needed under the cement board.in the shower area. Any questions you e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
