Q: Last night we found our basement carpet soaked after a rainstorm---there was not standing water (until we pulled up the carpet and padding), but it was set enough to squish when you walk, etc. We pulled up the carpet and threw away the padding. We've been trying to dry it out with a fan, but it doesn't seem to be helping. What steps should we take to save the carpet? We really can't afford to replace it right now. If Goodwill is not available where you live then try thrift stores or the Salvation Army Thrift Store for sales and or auctions. You could save lots.

If there is no white spirit, left white spirit at home is ok. it you accidentally spilt coffee on the carpet, wipe with a dry cloth or tissue to absorb the moisture, vinegar also has the same effect to such stains like black tea.

Q: theres a burn mark on my carpet about the size of a silver dollar and i want to try and replace it whats the best way to go about it?: Do you have any spare carpet from when they installed the carpet? You can cut a small section out and match it to the spare carpet, then use carpet tape to reapply it. Or you could cut a small piece out of the back of a closet and use it to patch. It would be a lot easier to just put a nice throw rug over the burn mark though.

Q: I bought a couple of area rugs I have recently moved them have found that the backing is leaving dull looking marks on the wood flooring. How do I remove the marks??: not sure what kind of marks you are referring too so check with a floor expert in your area before you do anything so you don't add to your problem . or resend in more details . after you get the floor problem resolved put a good grade rug pad under it . that will protect your floor from further damage

Q: I have a rug that is a 5 x 8 and it is still wrapped in the original plastic. Can I ship it through UPS that way? With the label on the plastic?: I think below given points helps you. 1. Determine whether you can fold or roll your rug. Some rugs cannot be folded or rolled without damage. Check for dry rot by feeling the rug for stiff, brittle areas. If you find dry rot, you will want to have this damage repaired professionally before you ship the rug. If at any point during this process you hear a crackling or snapping sound, immediately stop and seek professional assistance. That is the sound of damaged fibers in your rug breaking. 2. Lay your rug flat on a clean surface. Fold one of the longer edges toward the center of the rug, a little less than 1/3. Repeat this with the opposite edge, folding it over your initial fold. Be sure not to have your folds overlap, otherwise there may be needless stress applied to the rug in shipping. 3. Fold the rug again. Fold both the opposite shorter edges toward the middle of the rug. Rug Rag recommends that you let the rug fold where it falls naturally. 4. Roll the rug starting from one of the shorter edges. 5. Tie the rug to secure the folds using rope or a strong twine. 6. Wrap the rug with a towel or padding for protection. Add additional padding on the ends of the rug, because rugs tend to be dragged during shipping. Rug Rag warns against using newspaper, because newspaper will bleed onto the rug if wet. Secure the additional padding with more twine or rope. 7. Wrap the rug in a heavy-duty, nontransparent plastic or Tyvek polyethylene material. Mark the plastic clearly with Do Not Use Hooks. Tape off any ends to make sure it is waterproof. If the rug will be stored for a long time before it is unpacked, throw in a few moth balls to prevent moth damage before you seal the plastic. 8. Package your rug in any packaging material you wish, and ship with your preferred shipping carrier. Purchase insurance to ensure peace of mind when shipping.

Q: I will have some carpeting left over from a whole house install, and would like to use some for a area rug in my dining room. What can I do to the bottom to cover the scratchy texture of the carpeting so it doesn't scratch my wood floors?: I'd go buy two things......plastic sheeting, and then some durable, but soft fabric from a fabric shop. Attach these two to the underside of the carpet....voila`....I'd say that should work. The plastic sheeting will help keep the under-fabric from wearing out too quickly and if any liquids were to spill on it the liquid would be confided to that rug and not the floor underneath. The fabric is obviously to protect the floor.

Q: Hi I am fairly new to knitting and I am trying to learn how to knit a quot;purl stitchquot; rug out of a book I just purchased. The book doesn't have very good instructions. If anyone has perhaps a youtube video they could share I would love to see it. Please help! :(: I don't think a purl stitch rug is a standard thing that would have a video. It sounds like a design made specifically for that book. The thing is, there is no need to purl a whole rug when it is generally easier to knit than to purl, and a purl is just the back side of a knit stitch. So you could knit the whole thing in whatever shape you like and just turn it over to have a purl stitch rug.

Q: how do my friend and I get blue-green marker stains out of carpet without making it worse? hopefully quickly?: If you go to your local grocery store (price chopper, Hannafords, shop rite, etc.) Sometimes you can rent carpet cleaners or if you go to a bed bath and beyond or linens and things you can buy a carpet cleaner.
