- Q: I am going toceramic tile a commplete small brm do I have to drywall or can I just cement board T.Y.F.Y help?
- If brm means Bedroom..... And it is going to be used just for that , I would put up greenboard ( a type of drywall used in bathrooms ) . Are you going to be doing the walls ,floor to ceiling ? And it also sounds like you are covering the ceiling too. ? Sounds kinda strange What are you going to use the room for?
- Q: I had to make some necessary repairs behind the wonderboard and I ended up making 6x6 inches holes through the cement board. I have repair sheetrock in the past but this cement board looks difficult to repair. I have googled online on how to do the repairs but I could not find much. Thank you in advance for all who will answer.
- Just like with drywall. And since you've already done that, you're in familiar territory. It's only the materials that are a little strange. You could do a little research on patching holes that size in drywall, just substitute wonderboard everywhere it says drywall and be well served. You can cut some patches out of scrap wonderboard to fill the holes you've made, and pin them in place by inserting screws in the gap between original and patch. If you want a little more security, add some lumber in the space of the wall to bridge the gap and attach your patch to the lumber. Then just butter the gap with mortar or grout mix. Sand with a concrete stone, job's done. Let the tiling begin. Good luck with it.
- Q: I'm having old (30 plus years), damaged slate tiles removed and replacing it with ceramic tiles. I've discovered there is cement underlayment under the slate tiles. I'm having this work done for me and so far the floor looks like grenades have hit it. There are pot holes. How in the world are you suppose to remove these slates tiles that have been adhered to cement?? And, how do you repair the flooring to eventually lay down cement board and ceramic tiles?? I'm sick to my stomach.
- Whoever is doing the work for you will know what to do. It is a job. If you are sick to your stomach, I would advise you watch what you are doing in the kitchen before you poison yourself with your cooking.

- Use Hardibacker and seal the seams with tape and thinset. Use thinset to set the tile using 1/4 spacers. I have used and recommend that you use a tile sealer to seal the slate prior to grouting and to use epoxy grout. The grout is more difficult to install but requires no sealers which need to be redone at least once a year in a shower and is well worth the initial time and effort. Be sure to read and follow the directions on the grout bags to ensure a uniform color and good grout set. MT C

- Q: I want to install ceramic tile in my kitchen. My subfloor consists of 2x8 on 16 centers with 1/2 5 ply plywood. Will it be OK to lay 1/2 cement board directly on this or do I need to some how increase the strength of the subfloor? Any recommendations.
- you could do that and MAYBE not have a problem. but if it was me, the 1/2 would come out and 3/4 would replace it. i have done a few jobs for people that dont want to replace the 1/2 and didn't have any problems with the tile or grout lines cracking. its just up to you really. if there is ANY give at all on you floor right now, id replace the 1/2.
