- Q: I have these horrid terracotta coloured sofa covers. They are horrid because our carpet is wine red - so they don't go! They are unused - so are the 'spare' set...but our current set has seen the last of its days. I am hoping to save money and not have to buy a new sofa - but just make sure that these sofa covers are a better colour than they currently are!Dylon pre-dye - which is for removing colour seems to work okay. But it hasn't removed enough for me to feel that it is okay to then dye them - I am going for beige. As the carpet is already dark, I do not feel that dark sofa covers will work. So - I was wondering if I could further use bleach for these covers (they are cotton) and how much I would need to use in the washing machine for them to do the job. They don't need to be white - just a bit lighter than they are! They are sorta a darker buttercream once the pre-dye has been used. Any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated! - TIA

- Is the surface damaged in any way? Depending on the quality, there are things you can do to repair it. use rubbing alcohol to wipe down the area, which should remove any odors present on the surface. The real issue is if it damaged the material or soaked into the cushions. Most quality sofas have access to the cushion cores and backrest foam to replace if it soaked in. If it is in the foam, no amount of cleaning the surface will remove the smell, it is fairly cheap and easy to replace the foam.

- How about a futon? There a sofa then easily make into a bed and come in diff. sizes and styles. Generally they are less expensive than what you are talking about and they save a lot of space.

- I've had a sofa and a few chairs reupholstered. The sofa was the most expensive because of the amount of materials needed. I think I paid about $175 for that and about $100 each for the chairs. But I didn't have to pay labor because my mom did them for me. Some tech colleges offer upholstery classes and you can do your own for less than paying a professional or sometimes the people in the class are looking for projects to do.
