- Q:I recently took out my old ceiling fan, and now there is a Black, Red, And White Wire hanging from the ceiling, I bought a track light that has a box with a Green, White, and Black wire in it. Which wires am i supposed to connect,It's for the light Switch, and I'm not sure when the house was built, its a Reading, PA Row house.
- Black and red are both hot wires; green is ground and white is neutral. Connect the black wires together and cap off the red one. This extra wire, the red one is for a wall switch. Connect the white wires together (neutral) and the green can be attached to the frame (ground wire). This is of course if the ceiling was wired right. If it doesn't work, switch the black to red capping off the other black wire. There should be directions with the new fan?

- I would use simple 12-18 Volt (low voltage) garden path lighting with a focused beam spotlight. You won't need to protect the wiring if you do that. If you use 110-120 Volt wiring, you're going to need to bury conduit to protect the wiring. The low voltage stuff is alot easier.

- It should be the BLK/ LB wire (although my wiring schematic shows that wire BLK/ GREEN), It will be the only circuit that have a varying voltage between 0-1 volt. Probe the wires with a DVOM and determine which wire has the signal, one wire will supply B+ for the heater, one is heater ground, one is reference supply voltage and one is signal return The signal return is the circuit you need to tap.

- Four wire power cables used to be used for 2 and 3 phase power. You would normally provide floodlight power with the use of 3 wires. How long is the cable length from house to floodlights? I would look to see what your source wire colors are and try to match those. It used to be in the USA that the red wire was used to carry the 120/240 Volts AC (50 ~ 60~ Herz). The Black wire was considered the return or negative line; and if you have a green wire it is used to put an earth ground on all the shielding, metal jackets, etc.
- Q:How can I repair an enamel coated headphone wire? In other words, how can an enamel coated wire be reconnected; i.e. how is the enamel coating stripped off, and what can I use to recoat it so that it won't short?
- Strip off the coating to expose bare metal where you would to slice (reconnect) new wires. Twist them or soldier them together. The wires will not short unless they come in contact with electricity-conducting materials, including human flesh. Hardware stores sells paint just for wires, but you don't have to go such extremes. Just put some tape it or cover it with any other non-conductive materials.
