- Q: Hi, about 2 weeks ago I was in my ex boyfriend's attic (with his permission! lol) and he noticed a crack, which turned into a hole when I slipped and almost fell through into the bedroom! If you lie in bed you can now see right through to the attic; while it could be considered a design feature, my ex isn't keen on it :-) It's not very big, probably only 1.5ft square if that but obviously the plaster is missing, one of the lathes (think that's what they're called; the thin pieces of wood just behind the plaster) is broken in half and poking throught he hole and little bits of the fibreglass indsulation are falling down. My ex told his landlord who said it would cost ?150 to repair the damage, but I'm convinced my ex could do it himself...but how? Any ideas? I have been offered a large piece of plasterboard, could he use this in any way and would he have to enlarge the hole to replace the entire lathe? How does he replaster...etc - help please!

- Q: What is good material for external wall insulation
- External wall insulation grid cloth introduction (Fiberglass mesh) is based on the alkali or alkali - free glass fiber yarn as raw materials, woven into a glass fiber mesh for the substrate, and then coated with acrylic Acid copolymer solution drying from a new type of alkali-resistant products. The product has a stable structure, high strength, good alkali resistance, corrosion, crack resistance and other characteristics, enhance the best results, and the construction is simple and easy. Mainly applicable to cement, gypsum, walls, buildings and other structures inside and outside the surface enhancement, anti-cracking, is the external wall insulation works of a new building materials. ZrO2-containing alkali-coated fiberglass mesh is made of ZrO2 glass fiber woven fabric as the substrate, the polymer alkali-resistant emulsion immersion coating. Which has excellent resistance to alkali, flexibility and latitude and longitude tensile strength to JG158-2004 national standards, can be widely used in building exterior wall insulation system, waterproof, crack and so on.
- Q: I am doing some minor remodeling on a house. I wanted texture on the walls but didn't want to deal with the mess (and expertise required) of spray texture, so I'm creating a custom texture on the walls by hand using lite joint compound and a 12" taping knife. My question is: what do I do on the ceilings? Can I do the same thing on the walls, or will I kill my back (especially if it needs sanding). I've heard of people wrapping a small piece of plywood in plastic and using it to apply joint compound to the ceiling such that it creates little stalactites that you knock down after they have hardened slightly. That sounds difficult to get uniform across the entire ceiling. What should I do?
- Wow, that's really out of style now, and a big project that is very hard or impossible to change down the road. But hey, you have your own style, thats just my opinion. If you really want to go through with this, DO NOT use joint compound!! It's not designed for this and will crack over time, especially from the lightest bumps that walls sustain, plus houses do move a tiny bit from expansion, contraction, humidity, and settling. This will surely crack the joint compound. I would use a texture thats designed for this, and its more like a plaster, much harder. They sell these special texture mixes at most paint stores and design stores, and also sell different applicators, from sponge applicators that you dab, to grooved spreaders that you swirl. You could always try using regular paint with different texture-like results, that aren't permanent if you change your mind years from now. You can sponge a colored paint to look cool, and they sell special rollers that give a texture pattern.
- Q: I had a stucco like substance on my bathroom ceiling that was peeling and falling off. I scraped it all off and found a layer of pink paint beneath the stucco that also was peeling in many spots. Underneat the paint is plaster that has some spots. I have an exhaust ceiling fan in the bathroom but don't think it works terribly well. I am considering scraping the remaining paint off then filling in uneven spots and corners with spackling compound then painting over the whole thing again but I am concerned that the spackle will not adhere well in the spotted areas. Does anyone have any recommendations?
- Noticed you got-a-few questions. I had mold in the same area but it wasn't too bad. First get a sponge, rubber gloves and goggles and wipe down the mold. Do this several times. Then gouge the spots out and sponge it again. Let dry, patch and primer with 'kilz' primer. You can re-texture and paint . If its not bad this will work. Hope this helps with the honey-do-list.
- Q: I had the roof replaced last summer, but havent had the energy to get up there and take down the ceiling tiles and the fiberglass insulation. I started removing it a section at a time a week ago, and wow! What a mess!. Gravel is falling down on my head and the insulation and tiles are dry now, but its still hard to pull them out. Should I be wearing a mask? Is there anything in the old dried out insulation and ceiling tiles that I should cover my nose? Its making a really big mess, so any suggestions will be helpful.
- You should absolutely weat a mask! There's fiberglass in there you said and you don't want that in your lungs along with all the dust and dirt. Fiberglass never disolves and it is made from glass.
- Q: I was replacing a bathroom fan and the new bathroom fan is bigger than the old one. I took out the old one. Then I used a pencil and traced around the new fan. Then I used a reciprocating saw for the first time and got a little crazy with it. Now the hole is slightly too big and when I put the grill cover on the fan, I can see the hole. I'm not sure what to do now. I still got old pieces of the ceiling. Maybe I can do something with it?
- I saw this fiberglass or plaster designer piece that you can put up in a situation where the opening is now too big for the fixture. It hides the mistakes of the uninitiated. I think Mark is under the impression that you just want to close the hole.
- Q: New home decoration is the choice of all-inclusive or half-pack good?
- All-inclusive peace of mind half-bag assured if you choose the whole package recommended the use of materials and specifications in parallel into the contract if the choice of semi-package to run the market do not easily meet the gold than the three do not suffer to the seller to obtain quality assurance
- Q: Drawing a candy shop, what should i put on the ceiling apart from lights??
- The ceiling should be tiled like peppermints!! ^o^
- Q: Cast-in-place floor (ceiling position) Reinforcement protective layer is not enough, local steel exposed. I intend to use epoxy resin mortar
- I have dealt with a variety of cracks blocked, fill, closed. And epoxy mortar of the prestressed anchor head and structural reinforcement. Specification of epoxy coated steel bars, the anchorage length should be increased, the correction factor is 1.25 see GB50010-2017. Can be seen that the surface is more smooth and easy to erosion.
