- Q: I had a stucco like substance on my bathroom ceiling that was peeling and falling off. I scraped it all off and found a layer of pink paint beneath the stucco that also was peeling in many spots. Underneat the paint is plaster that has some spots. I have an exhaust ceiling fan in the bathroom but don't think it works terribly well. I am considering scraping the remaining paint off then filling in uneven spots and corners with spackling compound then painting over the whole thing again but I am concerned that the spackle will not adhere well in the spotted areas. Does anyone have any recommendations?
- You can purchase mold killing paint in a number of hardware stores. Go ahead and scrape off the remaining paint, then paint it with the mold killing primer (Kilz), then paint normally. As for the patching: Spray the affected areas with a mildewicide, and then spackle. Paint with mold killing primer, and paint as normal. You might think about replacing the fan as well.
- Q: Magnesium oxide and magnesium chloride
- Magnesium chloride Uses: for the production of metal magnesium, disinfectant, frozen brine, ceramics, and used to fill the fabric, paper and so on. The solution is mixed with magnesium oxide, can become hard wear-resistant magnesia cement. Magnesium oxide is mainly used for the preparation of ceramic, enamel, refractory crucible and refractory bricks of raw materials. Also used as a polish, binder, coating and paper filler, chloroprene rubber and fluororubber accelerator and activator. And magnesium chloride and other solutions mixed, can be made of magnesium oxide water. Medicine for antacids and laxatives for gastric acid, stomach and duodenal ulcer disease. Raw materials used as catalysts and magnesium salts in the chemical industry. Also used for the production of glass, dyed meal, phenolic plastic and so on. Heavy-duty magnesia Milling industry for firing and grinding. The construction industry is used in the manufacture of artificial chemical flooring, artificial marble, heat shields and sound insulation panels. The plastic industry is used as a filler. It can also be used to produce other magnesium salts.
- Q: I have removed textured wall paper from ceiling, the plasterboard is in very good nick, but has gaps between sheets?I really dont want to have to get it all re-skimmed.would the correct approach be to plasterboard joint tape, then lining paper over over it, before painting?Id appreciate a how to.....
- when you say plasterboard if your talking about sheetrock than yes, youll be ok...if its plaster then you best bet would be to put a fresh layer of 1/4 sheetrock over it and have a nice new flat ceiling that wont crack up on you.
- Q: I'm thinking of adding a ceiling to my porch to create an insulation space (the roof alone radiates a lot of direct heat in the summer; the porch otherwise is open) between it and the roof (corrugated fiberglass) but I'd like to still be able to see the roof as I've already painted the roof's interior and like how it contrasts with the supporting frame's color.I'm also looking to paint the exterior of the roof to better waterproof it (some leaks where previous owner screwed it in) and to better reflect light to further reduce heat. Any suggestion on paint or would it be better to just replace the roof entirely with better material? Thanks!
- There are many ways you could go. Yes, you can use the plexi to create insulation space. The best insulation is dead air. That is, air that cannot circulate and move around. The key to using it will be using something to seal it tight, a clear silicone caulk, perhaps. They make a special glue for it, you could make smaller areas to help keep air movement down with strips inside the ceiling area to form the pockets of air. Think bubblewrap, only solid. Probably caulk or glue on the joists is good enough. As for the exterior, fiberglass is extremely difficult to get paint to stick to, unless you use the gel coat stuff made for it. Maybe there is a good primer to make it take paints. If possible, paint it with the same stuff made for mobile home roofs, tho I don't know how well it will stick to fiberglass, it does fine on the metal roof of a mobile home. The stuff I'm talking about is available in only a few colors, white, silver, gray, and black. It's thick, like tar, but not tar. If you use the silver or white, it should help keep down the heat, after all, that's what it's designed for. It also has insulation and leak sealing properties. If you have a good cheap supply of the plexi, you could also put plexi over it for sealing, but before you do, you could use window tint on it, the kind that looks like a mirror on one side, and is dark on the other. put the mirror towards the sun. If you put your mind to it, there are probably many many ways to get done what you need to do. Maybe there's some way to use recycled materials.
- Q: The wall is a good brush or paste the wallpaper good ah that is more environmentally friendly if the brush which is also what brand of good paint

- Q: When I moved into my house the ceiling was cracked from the ceiling fan out to the walls in two directions. I don't want to put new wall board up and repairing the crack is not possible according to my Husband. What are some ways to cover the ceiling up?
- These cracks should be repairable unless they are structural damage. All you need to do is clean out all loose debris from the crack and repair with joint compound and tape. Go to your local home improvement store and look at their books on drywall repair
- Q: We have removed our rough sawn cedar from our cathedral ceiling in our 80's home. We found fiberglass insulation and 2x6 joists (the roof is directly above). The first electrician came out before we removed the ceiling and assumed there was no insulation and said we needed to get spray insulation because of the condensation can lights can cause. The other electrician we called out came after we removed the ceiling and did not say anything about condensation. Neither said anything about ice dams. I am seeing all this pretty scary stuff when doing my research, and am thinking we shouldn't put in recessed lighting now! We live in Wyoming where the climate can be pretty cold, but is usually very dry.So, if we use LED lamps and IC airtight housings, will the heat transfer really be bad enough to cause condensation and/or ice dams? Would it help to put some foam board between the shallow housings and the roofing substrate (if it fits)? We are only planning on putting up 6 6" lights in a 10x20 room...
- with that type of light they need to have free air around them ,you dont have enough space, nor would you roof be insulated, you may wish to rethink your lighting , the joys of remolding
- Q: Sorry for shouting,,lol,,,want to replace 40 year old fibrglass insulation in basement ceiling with new, joist are 16 inches apart and 2x8 sized,,,what size insulation should i use
- Why are you insulating the ceiling of a basement,? Unless there is no heat in the basement it is not efficient to insulate the ceiling from a heating stand point. But it's your ceiling. Size 15x 93 batts R factor 19
