- First of all, if you clean your carpets regularly (twice a year), the cost of purchasing a carpet cleaner versus renting may be warranted. Second, if you really want to cut costs, don't mind using elbow grease, and want much cleaner carpets, try a mixture of ammonia and water, using a scrub brush. Using a terry cloth, rinse with vinegar and water. This is an excellent way to clean high traffic areas and area rugs.
- Q: I am just starting to get back into horses again after about 5 years and at the moment i am looking after a friends horse while she is away on holiday.. feeding them etc.one of her hoses has an unwaterproof rug. - Definately take his wet rug off before you put the waterproof one on. Can you put the horse in a shelter whilst you swap rugs so you can towel dry his coat before putting dry rug on?
- Q: I have had a rug over top of a heat vent for a while, but I wanted to make sure it is safe.
- It depends upon what kind of heat vent you have. If it is a floor furnace, it would get hot enough that it could start a fire. If it is a forced air heating duct, the rug would prevent the air from coming into the room, but the temperature of the air coming out isn't high enough to cause a problem. If it is a forced air heating duct, you could pull the register out of the floor, cut a hole in the rug the same size as the duct boot and slip the register back into the hole so you would have the warm air coming into the room.
- Q: I just spilled coke on the cream colored carpet and just scrubbed it down with a wet wash cloth thoroughly. The problem is that I don't know if it will stain when it dries. How can I get the stain out if it occurs without ruining the carpet. I live in an apartment and don't want any damage.
- Next time, don't scrub, just blot repeatedly. Now just press a damp (not wet) wash cloth into the area and leave it overnight. The sugar will tend to migrate up into the cloth as the outside of the cloth dries. Tomorrow when the cloth feels quite dry, check the stain. It may be all gone. Let the carpet dry completely and fluff up the nap with an old hairbrush or coarse comb. If there's still signs of the stain (likely around the outside of the perimeter where you were scrubbing, try brushing a mixture of baking soda and salt into the carpet. The salt has a slight bleaching action; the baking soda is a good absorbent. Leave on the stain for 24 hours and vacuum.
- Q: we live in a rented apartment, we have carpet installed but we would prefer hard wood so much better. is there a way, inexpensive much preferred, to have hard wood over the carpet without damaging the carpet? hope to hear some interesting suggestions, thanks!!
- The tile floor would be ruined, and the value of the house lessened, but it can be done. A better idea, if the tile is nice is to buy large area rugs which have no slip padding on the back. It will be easier to keep the room clean also, around the walls, etc. Wall to wall carpeting really picks up a lot of awful stuff, look how much dirt you sweep up each day? A tile floor is healthier than wall to wall. Get some better shoes for indoors, although I have marble and tile and love the feel on my feet, which no longer hurt as they used to.? Don't know what that means for you, though, Good Luck

- Carpet should be kept as dry as possible. generally, cotton and wool may breed insects, so it depends on what material it is . When the weather is good, you should clean it and hang out in the sun. you should put more refresh plants like pennyroyal at home.

- Never a double sided tape, it will leave a residue and attract dirt. The use of a pad as some say is the right way to go. Its actually a very thin mat that goes under the rug. It has a tacky feeling but leaves no residue. There are a couple different types for your rugs. Some are made for rugs over hard wood ( allows the wood to breathe ). Some for rug over carpet and some for rugs over a hard surface. These don t react with a vinyl and stain the vinyl. After a few months, depending on your foot traffic, they lose there tackiness because they naturally collect dirt. They are washable and return to their natural state and work again. Some will suggest the mats you use for cupboards, these will work and also can ruin vinyl or a hard wood. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar..GL

- You can try vinegar, that is what people use to get wine up. The best would be paint thinner but it would probably bleach the carpet.

- Q: I just moved into a new apartment about three weeks ago, and the carpet in only one room smells like ammonia. It's a really terrible smell and it won't go away after vacuuming many times. I know they shampooed the carpets before I move in. The lady before me who lived here had a dog. I know urine can smell like ammonia after it's sat awhile. Could it be that her dog peed on the carpet? Any ideas about how to get rid of the smell without shampooing the carpet?
- I believe it is dog urine. It is in the carpet and padding. The mess is from the previous tenants dog and it should have be taken care of by her security deposit. Talk to your landlord and ask about replacing the carpet because it is a health issue. When a person pays rent they usually pay a security deposit that is for any damages to the property and I would say that dog urine is damage and the carpet should have been replaced instead of being cleaned. I would not try to clean it in any way because it is the responsibility of the landlord to make sure that the rental property is clean and not in any violation with any health codes.
