Q: Thinking about buying a fuel injected motorcycle (TIRED of the issues with the 4 carbs on my kz11000), but noticed they have a choke cable on those as well.If it‘s fuel injected, why is this needed?
the fuel injection system on the bike is lagging behind some more advanced systems in it's mapping perimeters. the cable operates an enricher valve that does the same thing a choke does on a carburated engine. more attention has been given to this and it has been addressed on newer bikes like my '06 zx14. this system is not maintenance free. the throttle bodies need to be synchronized at scheduled intervals.
Q: on my back tire if i were to take it in to a motorcycle shop
well i just had mine done last week and it cost me $30 but thats because the shop was using a $10,000 mounting machine. my friend told me that this other shop charges about $10-15. it depends on how big the company is and how they are mounting the tire by hand or by an expensive machine.
Q: Do tire balancing machines work for both car and motorcycle tires?
Unless the machine says that it is capable to do it then no.
Q: Motorcycle tires 2.50-17 and 2.75-17 What is the difference
Tires are mainly composed of polymer composite materials, the temperature will accelerate the aging of rubber. When the car is traveling at high speed, the temperature of the tire is increased, resulting in increased tread wear. The tire has a critical speed of its design. When the speed reaches this speed, the tire will have a "standing wave" Is the tire's "critical speed", if the conditions continue to use, the tire will be the risk of bursting. For safety, the tire is not allowed to use more than the design speed, the tire design speed please check the sidewall logo. For your safety, please do not drive the vehicle more than the design speed of the tires.
Q: I am looking online for tires for my son‘s street motorcycle. I am looking at the Dunlop, which is what is on their now. How do you tell a decent motorcycle tires from a crap one? HIs bike is a Yamaha YZF 600R, if that makes a difference.
Many motorcycle shops won't install tires you purchased from another source. It's not because they're being cheap, it's a liability issue. So, before you purchase tires online, call or go down to your local dealer and see what their requirements are. Sometimes a local shop offers free tire mounting if you purchase tires from them. In many cases, it's cheaper to buy this way than it is to mail order the tires and pay shipping, plus mounting costs. As far as what to buy, ask at the dealership if they have a tire specialist, and what they recommend. Softer compound tires give better traction, but don't last as long (4,000 miles or less!). Harder compound tires last longer, but aren't as 'sticky'. There are some newer tires that use a dual compound - harder in the middle and softer on the sides. These are sort of the best of both worlds, but some riders don't like the transition. Determining the right tire for the bike and also for the rider is tough - but your local dealer can help (if they know their stuff!).
Q: What are the main indicators that tell you if a motorcycle tire is unsafe, and still has good tread? There are no cracks in the tires, however they have sat in inside storage for 15 years. What should I look for that would tell me that they are unsafe?
A catalytic converter is a device used to reduce the toxicity(carbon dioxide is an example of what your engine produces as a bi-product of combustion) of emissions from your engine. So if that is not working or working properly it means that the emission coming out of your car is not filtered. Price for a catalytic converter ranges from $89 to $200 from Napa auto-parts then again you need to have a shop install that for you or you could save a bundle if you have tools at home, you can do the install yourself.
Q: I was walking out of a store when I noticed my rear tire looked a little funny. The scallops can only be seen when a certain part of the tire is exposed. The rest of the tire seems fine.
As others have said, running a car tire on a motorcycle is a really bad idea. The construction is very different because the forces exerted by a motorcycle are totally different than the forces a car demands. I have heard people say things like, it's just a cruiser - i'm not dragging my knee around corners. Okay, but you're still leaning the bike at anything over parking-lot speeds. That's a force that the car tire is not meant to cope with. I have heard, my friend did it for 60,000 miles, and it was fine. Your friend got lucky. Motorcycles rely on 2 tires to provide traction. If 1 fails, you're in a LOT more trouble than if 1 fails on a car. Why risk your life to save a few dollars? a decent set of motorcycle tires is under $200. How much is it going to cost to repair you and your bike if the car tire fails?
Q: only 5 years ago. Dunlop K70s. The bike is kept in a garage but very seldom ridden. The tire walls are cracked and the tires need to be replaced. Only about 300 miles on them. Bike is in a garage and covered year round. Why? Should I ask Dunlop for replacements as this seems wrong?
It has been my experience that bike tires generally cost more than car tires, and don't last anywhere near as long as car tires. If you are not riding often, I suggest buying an inexpensive set of tires for it. They make some inexpensive off brand tires that are still safe and reliable. That way every few years or so when you need new ones you're not wasting exsessive amounts of money.
