Q: I've tried various vacuums through the years but none seem to do well on the edges of the carpet. Anyone tried a really good one for that?
I went out and got a shark dustbuster and it works gets around areas like that. It comes with a attachment that gets everything up i love it.
Q: At what point in history did vacuum cleaners become an appliance present in every household?
Something like 1949. It was being used before that. It took some time to accepted ans affordable.I don't my mother had one until 1959 ? Long time ago.
Q: crazy. Although I empty my bags or canister frequently, my vacuums only seem to last a few months. I just got a Dirt Devil about 2 months ago and its suction is just horrible now. Can anyone recommend a vacuum for under $500 that will last? Thank you.
Look, I had the same problem as you. I bought a Kirby vacuum and I am making payments on it. Now I had added the cost of the vacuums together and it was worth getting the Kirby because it come with a warranty that you can't beat. If it breaks they will fix it and if they can't fix it, I get a new one. I know it is more money than you intended on spending, it was for me to but it is a life saver. It also comes with a shampoo attachment that gets out all the old pet stains so I also saved money on replacing my carpet too.
Q: Geddit?
Haha :) You would make good money, cuz vacuum cleaners are expensive.
Q: I was conversing with a person in the vacuum industry and was informed that they were a bucket of s.h.i.t so don't be fooled by the marketing.
Let me quess, the person in the vacuum industry that you talked to was a vacuum cleaner sales person and Dyson isn't one of the brands they sell. A friend of mine owns a cleaning company and Dyson's are all they use and they love them.
Q: I know that 'commercial' refers to business applications, so I'm not looking for general information but details). Are the terms used in accordance with industry standards, or are they unique to each company? One company, Aerus LLC (formerly Electrolux Corporation), mentioned that the only differences between its commercial and household vacuum cleaners is that the former have less warranty protection, have longer cords, and do not feature above the floor attachments or headlights. Nothing was said about construction materials being different.
There may be no industry standard for those terms, the sales department of a company may have some say in how things get named, I would guess Heavy Duty may not be as touch as equipment actually meant for Commercial use. A household vacuum cleaner meant for Light Duty for example, might burn out of run continuously for an extended time.
Q: Why are vacuum cleaners so noisy?
It takes a powerful motor to create the suction needed to make a vacuum cleaner effective. There are quiet models, but they don't work as well. The best way to use a quiet vac is to go with a central, and have the canister mounted in the basement or garage. All you hear is the motor in the power head if you are vacuuming carpet, or the air moving if you are vacuum hard surfaces. Hope this helps.
Q: It also needs to have a good hose on it for vacuuming our sofas and be able to handle pet hair as we have a cat. Bagless is preferred
In my experience, NONE of the mass market vacuums are much good. They are full of bright colors and features but as actual cleaning appliances they are merely fair. Worse than that, they are all prone to failing at a relatively young age. Spending more money on a Dyson is not a good investment. Its main gig is the gimmick of the bagless design. At work we use Sanitaire SC vacuums. SC is a commercial model but don't let that stop you - the goal is to get dirt off the carpet. Sanitaire used to be a division of Eureka, but Electrolux bought them out. Don't worry, it's still the same design they've been building since the 1960s. No joke. 1960s. I guess when you come up with something that works, you don't screw it up by changing it. Anyway, I have homeless workers helping clean the place up with these things. Being homeless volunteers you could reasonably expect them to be tough on the equipment, and you'd be right. But some of these vacuum cleaners are about six years old and still going strong. You can get parts easily on the internet (OKorder has just about everything) and most of the repairs, when repairs are needed, only require a screwdriver. Belt changes are done in seconds. Emptying out the bag takes two minutes, tops - less if you don't spring for the slightly more expensive, reusable cloth bag, but then you have to keep replacement bags around. Not a big deal and the bags are available everywhere. Sanitaire SC series vacuums are available around the $100 level. I've been using them for decades - no exaggeration - and have tried many other machines. I keep coming back to Sanitaires. Good luck with it.
Q: I have one of those Roomba sweeper robots which I really like since it saves time, but my mom doesn't seem to like it for some reason that I don't know. Does anyone here have one, and how do you think it does?
Roomba is good in theory but doesn't work as well as other vacuum cleaners. It's suction is much weaker.
Q: Our Dyson Slim just broke down after two years of great clean-up... upon taking it in to a DYSON SPECIALIST... he informed us we needed to change the filters yearly as well as have a yearly maintenance check... I have never heard of this before, so I wanted to check into it to see if he was being truthful!
We have a Dyson and this is the first I have heard of it. I read the manual when we got it too. Is this guy trying to drum up business? Most vacuum cleaners you can do your own maintenance by keeping them clean.
