- Q:Here is what I have...a wire that looks like a regular cord for a plug in and a copper looking wire I assume is the ground. In the drop ceiling I have two wires that seem to have been been cut from electric cord and hard wired into another track lighting. I have had a light up here before but have not ever previously hooked electric up. I know it can handle the electric current. There are caps at the end of the wires so I am assuming (love assuming) that I can attach the wires from the light to these wires and recap. Then I need to ground the cooper wire, but what is a good ground? It is a drop ceiling so can I attach to the grid or wires holding the drop ceiling? Of course the electric will be off! I am wondering is it possible to cross the two wires and have a big boo boo happen? I appreciate the input. I am really needing to get this completed shortly so please anyone with some expertise respond!
- Ignore Andrew. He has dangerous misinformation. First off, the hot and neutral are not interchangeable. If you don't have white and black, there are other ways of identifying them. The white is neutral, which can also be indicated by ridges on that side (for lamp cord style wire). There are also less common ways, but the bottom line is they are not interchangeable. For the ground, no the ceiling grid is not a ground. If you are in an older house, you may not have a ground available. The best thing then would be to use a fixture that doesn't need one, if you can find one.
- Q:I have sheetrock on the ceiling of one of my bedrooms. Above the bedroom is a bathroom. I would like to replace the sheetrock ceiling with tiles that are removable, that way I can easily perform maintenance as needed - e.g. if the tub starts leaking, etc. Are there such a thing as removable ceiling tiles? Or a way to use regular ceiling tiles and affix them in a removable manner? I know this can be done with drop ceilings, but I'd rather avoid the loss of headroom caused by installing a drop ceiling.
- yes you can but I am going back into my last home tha was made in the 1850's, kidding the add on was made in the 1920's and you can buy ceiling tiles with the painted metal grid. we had it on our 1920's rental flat. I would suggest you, if you are in the USA go to a LOWE'S or HOME DEPOT and ask them as LOWES recently opened in my little mountain town and I see they sell them. I find them very attractive, but my question is...why install something if you have a fear of a leak. Thats all i ask and I know you know bettr than me on that answer. good luck!

- I think you are reffering to what is called a drop ceiling or sometimes a grid ceiling. If that is the case the panels are made from mostly fiberglass now and some older ones are made of fiberglass and wood fibers ( cellulose ) .home depot can find a good installer at a reasonable price in your area. IF you are near northeast ct I know of several contractors that do that type of work IM me for more info
- Q:Is there any requirements regarding hard wired smoke detectors on a suspended ceiling?I know luminaires are supposed to be properly secured to the grid, do smoke and CO detectors need to be? If so how?Right now, all I have is some old work boxes for the splices.I'm looking for a correct answer, I'm not going to cut corners.NEC code references are a plus.
- The cirping is the result of either a bad detector or other problem. Try turning off the breaker that supplies power to the detectors for 10-15 seconds and turning it back on. If it was nothing serious then this should clear the chirping but if the noise returns you may need to replace the detector and if you need to do that i would suggest a hard wired unit with battery back up.
