- In summer I use one good paddock rug (something light) and my summer shade, non rip light rug. So on the cool days and nights they where a paddock rug and the rest of the time their summer coats are protected from the sun - because we show. In the autumn I use a heavier winter rug (disappointed with my latest weatherbeeta - the straps have broken, leg straps and surcingle straps). Then just before winter comes I use an under rug as well. In the Spring as the temperature permits I undress my neds. I haven't used canvas rugs in a couple of years, but I certainly see them as more forgiving if they are left on the the horse gets a little warm.
