Q: I have a 1992 Toyota Tercel that sits in my yard. It ran at one time, but has been driven so little that it now no longer starts. Had this problem one time before and paid someone to fix it. They replace the fuel pump to get it started again. Other issues are lost title, back left tire seems locked, and busted windshield.I hate to just trash this car and wonder how difficult would it be to turn the motor into a backup power generator for my house? Is it feasible? One of our sister companies at work has a diesel engine that acts as a backup power for their computer room, so I wondered if I could possible do the same for my home.Any suggestions?
as Mark said anything is doable in exchange of some work! if it is economical, the answer is no as for the speed control you need a cruise control modify-it to keep the frequency constant as an example a Chevy truck 350 in? is 200HP as a vehicle and 40 HP as a stationary engine! there are lots to modify such as cooling, lubrication to be compatible with new venture from an academic point of view it is worthwhile because you will learn a lot about engineering, and this is priceless information good luck Di

Yes, diesels are common for generators, and they then tend to be small like this. Look for portable generators like for boats, RVs, etc., and then see if the engines are available separately or look up the engine makers directly.

Check the facts on bio diesel. It is very close to the original fuel Diesel used to run his engine. People think diesel is bad for the environment, but the facts are that it is a cleaner fuel than gas with the exceptions of the particle emissions, ie soot. Diesel is the scum fuel or the first processing of crude oil to usable oil. There are many diesel electric cars in Europe, which has tougher standards for most countries that in the US. It boils down to political. Big oil does not want you using a cheaper fuel so they can continue to make massive profits. Bio on a train would be very useful, as well as bio for most of the big rigs. Better fuel economy, power, and emissions. But that means planting more for fuel than food, and that also is political as we sell to and feed most of the 3rd world. Sorry its a big political sham, that's why I am going bio this year and converting waste vegi oil.

A generator is usually powered by a diesel or gas (petrol) engine which powers an alternator to produce mains power for hours provided it is topped up with fuel. A UPS uses a large battery and a high powered inverter circuit to produce mains power but is not expected to power equipment for very long, just long enough to shut them down safely without loss of data.

Q: I have a Kubota GL7000 portable diesel generator. now I've followed the recommended maint. schedule on it, new fuel filters, oil filters, oil changes, etc. I have just under 1,000 hours on it right now, it smokes a little when it's cold but when it warms up it runs nice and smooth and with no smoke, it seems to me that it's running really solid and I have no complaints or problems, but I'm curious how long a generator like this (2 years old) should last me?
ok so you a caring owner of the kubota gen. well a bit of smoke is ok w/ 1k hrs and you dont say how many times you use it ie you start it up just to ck it or your actualiy putting a load on it with power being draw on the gen. ? also its important that the oil your using is combatible with the weather and area your using it in trust this 40 w in the rockies aint gonna work and in winter you need a heater in the sump too keep oil warm

You need kilowatts, not kilowatt hours. The amount of power you need varies depending on who turns on what at any given time, and especially on what kind of equipment you are using in the mine. Mines can use huge amounts of electric power. Assuming you are talking about a fairly small mine, you are probably looking at something around 500 kilowatts peak demand. This would require a small power plant. You may be able to get a diesel generator this size, but it would be more efficient to use several smaller generators. This would allow you to shut down some generators to vary the output to meet the varying demand.

I'll add to what Rango said here. It really does depend on the locomotive. It depends on the train too, as well as the terrain. It's a careful manipulation of the throttle sometimes. There are times where a train of empties will follow you around with no problem. And sometimes in those cases you have to watch the amp guage because the amps can creep up on you and you gain unwanted speed. This may be in throttle positions 2, 3, or 4. Then there's times when you may have 100 plus loads, and one of your three engines had to be shut down for mechanical problems. Then you wish there was something you could do just to squeeze out a few dozen extra amps while in number 8 position. One engine I really miss is the old SD-9. That was the engine I learned on even though it was older than me. It held on to the track very well, could pull all day long with no maximum amperage load times, and allowed you to feel what the train was doing as if you had your hands on it.

Vegatable oil can be used to operate a diesal engine like the one in Willie's bus. But a jet engine like those in aricraft requires a fuel with a much higher octane rating and vegatable oil won't do.
