My question is the first time around I used 14g wire and it worked fine, light came on at the push button. When it was switched on nothing happened. So I went back to the 16gauge and wired it up and the bulb popped. Is this because the wire used is to small and not rated to carry the amps provided by the wall receptacle?
No. If the wire had been too thin, the light would still have lit and the wire would have become warm if you were passing too high a current through it. Q: I have a Speedaire 4B234 its currently wire to 120V but keep flipping the breaker and I have a 240V in the garage so I want to wire it to that. I looked up the specs on the 4B234. Says it CAN be wired to 240. You will just have to follow the wiring diagram on the motor or with the instructions. Specs say it pulls 15 amps at 120 v or 7.5 amps at 240 v. Your problem now is that maybe you only have a 15 amp or a 20 amp breaker. 15 amps is probably the continuous running draw. The current surge on start up goes over 20 amps and is what is flipping your breaker. you will need a double pole (2 wire) 20 amp breaker. wire it with #12 wire. Say a green, red, black. (or you can use blue and red) Green is always ground (should be). 240 volts works by being 2-120's out of phase by 180 degrees. One wire is pushing (+) while the other is pulling (-). You hook one wire to the motor in and the other to motor out. Running 240 will increase your efficiency.

You need to hook three wires into a five terminal switch? You aren't helping us much with any usable information. The yellow wire is the kill wire from the magneto. The black and red wires are hot from the battery and feed to the starter solenoid, assuming the switch has a start position. You need to check each terminal on the switch with an ohm meter to determine which function it serves and test the black and red wires with a volt meter to determine which one is hot now. Better still, why don't you specify the make and model, even the serial number if you can get it, and ask if anyone, including your local dealer, has a wiring diagram for that particular machine.

Q: The house was built in the 50's. Two wires are coming up from the switch and two wires are coming down from the top of the wall. I do not see a third wire. I attached the wall light wires left wires to left wires and right wires to right wires and light stayed on, when I moved the switch it threw the breaker. The wire coming down from the wall is probably the power line. The wire going to the switch is meant to switch the hot lead lead only. Check the wires on the switch. There is probably a black and white on the switch. You will want to hook the white wire coming from above to the white wire on the light. Hook the black wire coming from above to the black wire going to the switch. Hook the white wire coming from the switch to the black wire on the light. While you are at it take black electrical tape and tape both ends of the white wire that runs to the switch. This will indicate that it is a hot lead.
