- Q: Out of the blue, my main bathroom that guests primarily use starting having an earthy smell coming from the sink drain. Its on the main floor, and there are no floors above it (in other words, not another sink above it). I examined the plumbing under the sink, and everything seems to be in working order, no leaks, trap is in good shape, etc.What should I do here?
- In the bathroom, what you has happened that is causing the odor is that mainly hair that has gone down the drain has BUILT up and is clogging the drain at the PVC bend under your sink. Drano and other liquids don't really solve your problem in terms of how long it might last before recurrence, rather the Best Practical Solution is to get a Long Handle Pliers or Pipe Wrench that will twist off the PVC Tube (of course you need a flat pan underneath to catch some water) and once you have it off, you clean it out and dump the trash afterwards. Then reassembling it, you will need either Teflon tape or another temporarily (don't use permanent PVC glue bec it is meant to be taken of) substance <= visit Home Depot or Lowes Plumbing) and before you go, make sure you test & check that your long handled pliers or pipe wrench can open wide enough. Then after you reassemble everything, you simply turn on the water and test for leaks, and if none, you should be Good to Go! Hope the Above Info Helps and Best of Luck!

- Hi you can repair the sink with a epoxy resin that you can get in many colours. look on line also if you can apply on the underside of the sink. P.S If the damage was accidental you may be covered on your house insurance. You may be better advised to buy a new sink, your eyes will always be drawn to the repair when you use the sink. - Q: When ever i wash my hands in our bathroom, the water smells like rotten eggs. I thought the pipes are rusted out or something (old house built 1970) What should i do to make this awful smell go away? - I get the same problem every now and again. If the water only smells in your bathroom and not lets say your kitchen, then the smell is probably coming from your drain. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down your drain, then pour in boiling water and put plug in sink and let sit 1/2 hourish. This generally clears up any odor. You may have to do this once a month or so, but it's no big deal.

- you need to run a drain snake into the pipes in the wall to unclog them something like this sounds like your whole drainage system is not draining properly and may be backing up causing the pipes to fill up and get blocked. p-traps under sinks get blocked but pipes in the wall never get blocked unless you have serious drainage issues. you would be surprised the things that end up in pipes, toys, trinkets, paper products, underwear, people flush some strange stuff and at some point it can get stuck and stop proper drainage. assuming you have a regular sewer line and not a septic tank or private sewer system: to check the sewer lines, start by checking your sewer cleanout and run water in there (full pressure open water hose) it should not have water backing up. then flush all the toilets and see if you have good amounts of water flowing by. next to check the drain lines, you need to get on the roof and stick the water hose in each roof vent pipe for a good 5 minutes. run water in there (full pressure open water hose) it should not have water backing up in any sinks or drains and you should see clean clear water running past when looking into the sewer cleanout where the sewer line exits the house. this ensure the drains are clear and any blockage you have would be found between the sink or drain and the pipes in the wall and that can easily be snaked to clear the blockage. if you find your drain lines are blocked, you should have all your main drain and sewer lines cleaned out, it does not cost that much to have it done and lasts for 20-30 years.

- I never hear about that. And to be honest don't make any sense because what ever thing you pour in the sink eventually will wash and you will have the same problem. I did maintenance in a hotels for many years. and in some hotels we did PM 2 or 3 times a year in the entire hotels rooms. One of the things we have to do was disassembling part of the plumbing under the sinks and clean the pipes and i noticed that the tip that make the flapper up and down was catching all the hair and and stuff that people drain through the sink for months and in your case that may be the problem. because i think 90% of the time in the houses nobody clean those pipes. Is very very nasty see that hair. But if you call the plumber it will cost and arm or a leg to pay this guy. the same thing hapen on the bath tubs drains but since you can not get under to clean the pipes. un-screw the water stoper use a electrician nose plaiers and pull the hair is stock on the drain.
