- The primary function of an electronic drive is to provide for operation at various speeds. Slow speed operation is used when moving a load into position. Faster speeds are used for moving loads over longer distances. When the operating speed is steplessly adjustable, ramped acceleration and deceleration control is easily provided as well. Controlled acceleration provides smoother operation because acceleration at a constant rate means accelerating with a constant force or torque. Electronic drives control torque and current during starting. They perform a function similar to a reduced voltage motor starter, but they do it steplessly, more efficiently, with more complete control of applied torque. They provide more torque per ampere of current than any other starting method. This is very beneficial for the frequent starting and stopping often required for cranes. Electromechanical motor controls for cranes require additional contactors, relays and other components to perform functions such as reversing, motor overload protection and braking. These functions are incorporated into the electronic controls with electronic drives. - I don't believe there are any size restrictions, the main requirement is that there be 1000 of them. Since a lot of origami paper is prohibitively expensive to buy in large amounts, you'll probably be better off folding with whatever is convenient to you. This also frees you up to fold wherever and whenever you like, without having to lug around a certain size paper or a ruler and scissors. For instance, Sadako Sasaki, the famous Japanese school girl who attempted to fold 1000 cranes before her death from raditation-induced leukemia, had to fold with whatever paper was close to her - spare bits of medicine wrappings, napkins, candy wrappers, and wrapping paper from get-well presents.

- Q: do they start with the crane house and keep adding sections underneath it? Or do they build they tower and then somehow top it with the actual crane?
- I'm sorry, but there is no way that a crane can lift another section of itself up in the manner described by the first person (lift another 20-foot mast section into the gap opened by the climbing frame). Can you lift yourself off the ground by pulling up on your own collar? I was told that the crane is jacked up from the bottom, and they slide another section below the jacked up crane. Then they lower and bolt the crane to the new section that was inserted under the bottom.
