Q: How often is the average for replacing living room or bedroom carpet, I know it depends on the traffic, etc but just wondering averages and when is it time to replace instead of having it cleaned: I think 10 yrs or depends on how nasty/ dirty it is.

The driveway with the lawn hose is the easiest.Find two lawn chairs and place the rug on these chairs, or crates, anything to help the water drain from it after washing. When most of the water is drained, throw it over the fence or line to complete drying. Use some degreaser on the rug while you are washing it. The smoke may have some oils in it . You can also rinse with some fabric softener, just mix in bucket first and pour over rug. Only soapy water will get things really clean,those carpet cleaners just cover smells and don't really get anything clean. I only recommed mild soap because I don't know what your rug is made of, if it is synthytic just use laundry detergent. I wash 20 area carpets every spring out of my home, some or wool, cotton, and mixed , even one silk, I don't have a problem, just make sure it is completely dry before bring it back in. If you can't do these things, go to the grocery and buy fabric spray for oders, they work pretty fair.

Q: I need an area rug for my living room and here is a picture of my inspiration room compliments of Pottery Barn. The carpet in my living room is like a beigeish oatmeal color. They come in both traditional and contemporary looks and are great for high traffic areas and kids and pets. I have several of them inside my home and no one knows they aren't a higher quality rug. The Pottery Barn shot tells me you are looking at something more comtemporary so something with some great color choices to perk up the room would be great. These rugs are really inexpensive and great look so check them out. They come in all sizes and shapes. Grandinroad is slightly less expensive than Frontgate but look at both.

Q: I am going to get new carpet and a friend told me to get berber because it wears better.Does it?Is it more expensive than a good plush carpet?: It is very durable, but not very stylish. We just bought new carpet and the comment was made by the sales rep that most men buy berber because it is durable. We ended up buying Frieze which is a very fashionable style carpeting. It's not plush, not berber, but is kinda casual; it's life twisted loop carpeting. And it doesn't show traffice pattern much at all. Ours looks like the sample below. Good luck deciding!

Thanks in Advance.: A rectangular rug would look better under an oval table but you can do the oval rug under the rectangular table, as long as the rug is quite larger than the table... Otherwise, if the rug is too small and the table goes basically to the ends of the rug, the rug will look too small.
