- Q: My year old Bissell vacuum is starting to not work so well. It has way less suction than it used to and it makes weird sounds. Our upstairs is all hardwood linoleum so all I'm using it for my crazy 6' X 9' rug in the living room. Maybe all that cat hair is extra hard on vacuums? I don't know why I can't find one that will last. The one I had before this was a Eureka and it still had suction, but the rotating brush in the front broke out after 3 years of use. And it was used in an all carpeted house.What I love about my vacuum most is the compartment in the front that lets me easily dump out the dust instead of having to change a bag. But how to I search through the various upright vacuum cleaners to find one that isn't going to die after a year? Some of them say they are designed for many years, but how do I know what is real in those advertisements? Can any of you tell me what you use and how long it has worked for you? Thanks.
- Consumer Reports is usually good reference. We bought a Sears Kenmore Blue Moon Cannister vacuum this summer when we tiled our entire house and ripped out all of the carpet. With the hard floor attachment it works very well. It also has low emissions due to the fact it uses a bag to catch the stuff and also has a HEPA filter. It is a pretty stout vacuum and all of the attachments and stuff are in a storage compartment on top of the main body. We also have an upright that you can turn the beater bar off and use on hard floors. It works ok, but if you're going to use it on hard floors it is best just to take the belt off of the damn thing because the stopper isn't an electric switch, but a mechanical gizmo that pulls the belt back so it can't make contact with the motor. When you hit furniture or a wall, it pops back into place. That feature was not very useful and would have been much better if it were an electrical switch. Just remember, more $ doesn't necessiarily mean a better vacuum.
- Q: Does any store sell steam cleaners that you can use yourself instead having someone else come to your home every time you need to touch up the floor?
- Most places that sell vacuum cleaners also sell at least one brand of steam cleaner. Unless you will be using it a lot, rent one. When you unpack one you bought, you will also find that finding a place to store it is a real pain.
- Q: I would like to use a Dyson floor tool with my central vacuum system. The system uses a hose with a 1 1/4diameter attachement port. Does anyone know what the inside diameter of a Dyson floor attachment tool is? Or if it will ft a standard vacuum hose?
- Of course Jack from customer service wouldn't say Dyson accessories would fit other vacs. He wants you to buy a Dyson. Well, I have a shop vac and it has a 1 1/4 inch hose, but I cannot amazingly find a stiff bristle brush to go with a shop vac. So I am trying to see if this stiff bristle brush can be made to fit.
- Q: What are the OSHA regulations on repairing electrical cords on appliances like Vacuum cleaners?
- i would say have a new cord installed, i'm sure osha would have a problem with you getting killed from a badly patched cord.
- Q: Why are cats afraid of vacuum cleaners?
- I think it's the noise, yes, but it's also the fact that the noise is so sudden, from complete silence or whatever's going on in the room previously. If a cat is motionless and all of a sudden, something is pushed towards her and she has less of a comfort zone, that may also scare her. One of my previous cats used to puff up her tail, curl her tongue and hiss at the vacuum until it was about 6 inches away from her. Then she'd run and hide until the noise stopped and the monster was put back in the closet. If the monster stayed out in the open, she would attack it with her paw when it was shut off!
- Q: I was wondering how mch Psi/Atm needed for the high and low pressure pool vacuumes such as The Surfer Above Ground Automatic pool cleaner.
- You can never have more than 1 atm in a vacuum system. Obviously the more vacuum you generate, the better it will clean. Most vacuum cleaners probably produce between 50-80 inches of water vacuum.
- Q: how long have they been in use
- not sure but it has been several years I don't know anyone personally that has one I would like to try one but way too expensive for me!
