Q: (1) Aluminum is malleable. (2) Aluminum reacts with sulfuric acid.(3) Aluminum conducts an electric current.(4)Aluminum has a density of 2.698 g/cm3 at STP.Explain why.
The answer is statement 2 Reasons why: First, know that a chemical property of any element is something that results in the change of the chemical make-up of the element. The word for word definition in my textbook says: a chemical property is the ability of a substance to combine with or change into one or more substances through a change in the chemical formula for the substance Looking at all the other options: Statement 1: Whether or not a substance is malleable is whether or not a substance can be hammered or pressed out of shape and not break or shatter. Hammering a substance, or in this case Aluminum, does not change any chemical formula of Aluminum, it just changes the physical shape of the metal. Statement 3: If a substance is conductive of electricity, it means that the material can transport an electric current. This is not chemical because the electricity simply goes through the substance, it does not change or react with any of the atoms of a substance and change the chemical formula. Statement 4: Density is a purely physical property because it is how dense a material is, and it doesn't change the formula of a substance. Therefore, Statement 2 is the best answer because by reacting with sulfuric acid, the chemical formula of aluminum changes since the atoms recombine with the atoms of sulfuric acid and create a new substance and a new chemical formula with it.
Q: I've created a sculpture out of aluminum foil, but it's pretty flimsy. What can I paint or cover it with that would harden and support it? I was thinking a resin or something, but I have no experience with resins or epoxies... Any suggestions?
you can use more aluminum and add layers to it. It would depend on the shape and size what is the best, but yes, you could use fiberglass and resin - as long as it is not so flimsy that the weight of the additional material will already distort it. If you just use resin that could work as long as it is reasonably flat, as the resin will run, but you could paint a number of thin coats on. Depending how it looks you could also use something like bondo which is car repair putty which is resin based. It might be easier to work with as it is thicker and it can be carved/sanded easily. Though you need to use it outside or with very good ventilation before it is set.
Q: Are aluminum sheets suitable for use in marine or saltwater environments?
Yes, aluminum sheets are suitable for use in marine or saltwater environments. Aluminum has excellent corrosion resistance properties, making it a popular choice for marine applications. It forms a protective oxide layer that prevents further corrosion, making it durable and long-lasting in saltwater environments.
Q: Can aluminum sheet be used for food packaging?
Food packaging can utilize aluminum sheet, which is a popular choice due to its unique properties. This material is lightweight, flexible, and provides excellent protection against moisture, oxygen, and light. Consequently, it helps extend the shelf life of products and maintains their freshness. Aluminum sheet is commonly employed to package beverages, snacks, dairy products, and ready-to-eat meals. Furthermore, it is non-toxic and does not react with food, ensuring safety when in direct contact with consumables. Its versatility allows for easy customization to meet various packaging requirements. Overall, aluminum sheet is widely trusted and used for food packaging due to its durability, protective properties, and adherence to safety standards.
Q: Can the aluminum sheets be used for manufacturing chemical piping systems?
Yes, aluminum sheets can be used for manufacturing chemical piping systems. Aluminum is known for its excellent corrosion resistance, which makes it suitable for handling various chemicals. It is also lightweight, making installation and maintenance easier. Additionally, aluminum has good thermal conductivity, allowing for efficient heat transfer in chemical processes. However, it is important to consider the specific requirements of the chemicals being transported and consult with experts to ensure that the aluminum sheets chosen have the necessary properties and are compatible with the chemicals to be used in the piping system.
Q: How do aluminum sheets compare to other metals in terms of strength?
Aluminum sheets generally have lower strength compared to other metals. While aluminum is lightweight and has excellent corrosion resistance, it is not as strong as metals such as steel or titanium. Aluminum has a lower tensile strength and yield strength compared to these metals, making it more susceptible to deformation and failure under heavy loads. However, aluminum can be alloyed with other elements to improve its strength, and specific aluminum alloys can rival or even surpass the strength of some other metals. Additionally, aluminum's strength-to-weight ratio is one of its main advantages, making it a preferred choice in many industries where weight reduction is crucial, such as aerospace and automotive. Overall, while aluminum may not be the strongest metal in absolute terms, it offers a balance of strength, lightweight properties, and corrosion resistance that makes it a versatile material in various applications.
Q: How does the alloy composition affect the mechanical properties of aluminum sheet?
The alloy composition of aluminum sheet plays a significant role in determining its mechanical properties. The inclusion of different elements in the alloy can influence its strength, hardness, ductility, and other characteristics. For instance, adding small amounts of copper or manganese can enhance the strength of aluminum, while magnesium can improve its corrosion resistance. Additionally, the size and distribution of alloying elements within the sheet can also impact its mechanical properties. Therefore, careful selection of alloy composition is crucial to achieve the desired mechanical performance of aluminum sheet.
Q: What is the electrical conductivity of 101 aluminum sheets?
The electrical conductivity of 101 aluminum sheets is high due to aluminum being a good conductor of electricity.
Q: What is the final concentration of aluminum cation?
You have to be able to determine the number of moles of Al+3 that each solution contributes to the final solution: 1. aluminum chloride: AlCl3 Multiply the volume (in L) by the molarity to determine the number of moles of each compound dissolved in solution. 0.0431 L x 0.279 M = 0.0120 mol AlCl3 in solution When the AlCl3 in placed in the water, it dissociates to form the following ions: AlCl3 -- Al+3 + 3Cl- So for every one mole of AlCl3 placed in the water, one mole of aluminum ions will dissociate. Therefore, since we have 0.0120 mole of AlCl3 in the solution, that means that the aluminum chloride will contribute 0.0120 Al+3 ions to the final solution. 2. Aluminum sulfate: Al2(SO4)3 Multiply the volume (in L) by the molarity to determine the number of moles of each compound dissolved in solution. 0.0146 L x 0.464 M = 0.00677 mol Al2(SO4)3 in solution When the Al2(SO4)3 in placed in the water, it dissociates to form the following ions: Al2(SO4)3 -- 2Al+3 + 3(SO4)-2 So for every one mole of Al2(SO4)3 placed in the water, two mole of aluminum ions will dissociate. Use the mole ratios of the dissociation reaction to determine the number of moles of Al+3 ions that the aluminum sulfate contributes to the solution. 0.00677 mol Al2(SO4)3 x (2 mol Al+3 ions / 1 mol Al2(SO4)3) = 0.01354 mol Al+3 ions Therefore, the total number of Al+3 ions in solution is the sum: 0.01354 + 0.0120 = 0.02554 mol Al+3 ions The last piece of information needed to determine the concentration of the final solution is the volume of the final solution. Since the two volumes were mixed, the volume of the final solution will be the sum of the two solutions. 0.0431 L + 0.0146 L = 0.0577 L Therefore, to calculate molarity: Molarity = moles of solute / liters of solution Molarity = 0.02554 mol / 0.0577 L = 0.443 M Al+3
