- Q:I have carpet beetles. Will carpet cleaning kill them? If not, what should I do to get rid of them that is pet friendly.
- I have had a major problem with black and variated carpet beetles and no matter what I did, they kept coming back! I don't want to buy bug spray because I have a 6 month old boy. Recently I went on a whim and started spraying down the baseboards with colgate pro health mouth wash since someone told me it works for bugs and then I did an experiment. I found a beetle escaping running across the kitchen floor so I sprayed him and he was running, running, running then fell over dead! I decided to add some lavender oil drops to the mix to make it smell nice. Then, I was cleaning the bedroom and I had found a carpet beetle larvae out of its hiding spot so I took it and put it into an empty container and sprayed it with mouth wash and took it out right away on a dry piece of paper and only after a few seconds, it was dead. Try mouth wash. So far it seems to be an effective way of killing them- all life stages. Since the stuff doesnt have alcohol and if you spray the baseboards only, it shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't make a pool of it.

- Wal-Mart and Sears both rent out rug doctors (steam cleaners for carpets). Some Ace Hardware stores do this also. Wal-Mart would probably be the cheapest and if you've never used one before they can give you step by step directions. It will cost you about $30 - $40 for one day (depending on where you rent it from) plus the cost of the cleaner that you have to mix in with the hot water (usually about $20 for the big bottle and cheaper for a medium or small bottle). Go to the service desk at Wal-Mart and ask to rent a rug doctor. If your carpet is berber it will help but it won't make it look new if it is really dirty. Otherwise this should do the trick. The key, when you are cleaning the carpets, is to go VERY SLOW. You might want to go over high traffic areas twice. I clean my carpets once a month and this keeps them looking new!

- If you have a local carpet store maybe you could see if they have old sample carpet pieces that you could take for either free or really cheap and make them into a rug yourself. Backing shouldn't be too expensive, and you could actually apply it with caulk to make it more permanent.
- Q:Can I use hydrogen peroxide for my carpet cleaning machine to clean the carpet?
- I once got a nasty vomit stain in my oatmeal color carpets, I tried to clean it with regular Resolve but it didn't work. In desperation, knowing that dishwasher detergent is excellent to remove grease stains in white clothing, I used it on the carpet, and Eureka!!!!!, the stain disappeared completely. So, I decided to try using dishwashing detergent instead of the regular carpet detergent solution in the carpet cleaning machine and my carpets returned to it's original gorgeous color and all stains were gone. The carpets not only were cleaner, they smelled wonderful. Another good point of using dishwashing detergent is that is very low suds so it leaves no residue.
- Q:My mother wants to get an oriental rug appraised before perhaps selling it to be cut up. (It's very big but has some rips.) Is it worth getting it cleaned before the appraisal? Thanks!
- Places that appraise handmade oriental rugs are often also equipped to repair them. It can be surprising what even torn rugs are worth, depending on age and quality. I moved into an apartment back in college where someone had left an old wool oriental with frayed fringe and a couple of spots worn smooth. It was pretty so I kept it for years and eventually took it to be professionally cleaned -- they told me it was worth over $1000 if it was fixed up! They charged me about $100 to repair the fringe and the bald spots and another $50 to clean it and moth prrof it (probably costs a bit more now). I used it for a few more years and then sold it for $800. The appraisers will be able to look beyond it being dirty to evaluate it so don;t worry about doing that before they see it. Please DON'T wash it with rug shampoo and a hose like the other guy suggested. That would ruin the weaving and run the colors if it is made with old vegetable dyes and would likely shrink the cotton warp and really trash it.
