- Q: spruce up by stenciling on them. What sort of pre-clean should I do and what sort of paint will stick to a heavy plastic blind?
- Blind or shade? Wash with TSP if its a blind, and use any paint you want, preferably stencil paint. Forget it if it's a shade. Paint will not stick to flexible plastic permanently
- Q: I bought a halloween plastic poster of a black cat for a window and it ended up melting to the window, I took as much as I could off but there's quite a it left and the ink also left behind..put rubbing alcohol on it and tried scraping..not the best solution there. Thanks for any easier solutions you may have!
- WD-40 will remove the ink freeze the rest with an ice cube scrape it off
- Q: Do they get melted down with the paper particles or is there someone that removes the plastic parts? Just curious.
- These bits of plastic get caught in the screens that filter the water out after the paper is pulped, since they are no good for making new paper. These filters take out all kinds of contamination that would be bad for the new paper. The sludge left on the screens is usually discarded in the landfill, but in some areas it's composted.
- Q: Is it necessary to remove the plastic window from paper CD sleeves before recycling?
- Not in UK
- Q: I need to put plastic on my windows for the winter. It never looks right, and they always pop off during stormy cold winter weather. Any advice?
- Are you using the shrink wrap type plastic (you use a hair dryer to shrink it down)? I have had good experiences from this stuff, but if you can't get a very nice seal between the plastic and the window frame then it's not going to help much. Is the plastic popping off right away, like while you are blow drying it, or later like the next day or a month later? The problem could be from dust or grime or maybe an oily buildup (especially near kitchens) on the window sills and frames. If this is causing your problems, then a good no residue degreasing cleanser could help you a lot. If that doesn't help, then maybe the particular paint on your sills and frames doesn't work well with the plastic attaching stuff. If you can get the plastic in place and start the shrink wrap process maybe you can shrink it a little less, so there won't be quite so much tension on it but it will still be in place and insulating your house. edit: yes the shrinkwrap goes inside the house over the windows and yes it will work fine. Why did this other dude think i was talking about outside? Cause I mentioned dust and grime? The don't know indoors can get dirty, too?
- Q: I'm about to move into an apartment room that I have been warned gets very cold in the winter (I live in MN). However, the person telling me this also mentioned that the windows had not been plastic wrapped the previous winter. In her opinion, however, plastic wrapping the windows would do no good because according to her quot;you can actually feel the cold coming up through the floor.quot; I think it's possible though that what she felt coming in through the floor was actually the drafts from the window sinking to the ground and spreading. Would plastic wrapping my windows eliminate this problem? Or would the room still be cold/I should request a different one? Thanks
- The glass itself? No. It needs an air barrier between the plastic and the window.. So basically you put plastic on the sill and walls, covering the window over all, and yes, that does work. I do it on my bathroom window during winter. Because it gets freekin' cold. Nobody likes taking a hot shower, then walking out of it nude in to Antarctica..
- Q: I have a 4quot; tear in the plastic drivers side window. Are there any adhesives or techniques to fix it?
- None that will look nice. You could use a thick clear tape however it will look ghetto.
- Q: I want to install low-E plastic film on my window. I'm a do-it-yourself and I want it to be revesible for summer and winter to ensure I save the more energy. I also want something transparent. Thanks
- One of the cheapest places to get it if you can do it yourself is at Lowe's. They sell a large variety of tint with different shades and performance for windows and doors you can custom cut. If you are trying to save energy, they have a heat reflective film that I believe is up to 90% heat reflexive. It is in transparent and mirrored coatings. If you plan on removing it, make sure you get the static cling style and you can remove it and reuse it against next season because there isn't any adhedsives left on the film or glass. Make sure you really wet the glass and film on installation. Good luck!
- Q: Have very little budget to work with, paid Marshall Construction of Kalamazoo to do the roof, haven't seen him since (Even with the contract), windows are in really poor condition and need to be replaced but don't have the funds to do it (Lost job like everyone else in Michigan). I have almost a zero budget to do this thanks to people like Marshall construction. Any suggestions how to get this 900 sqft home to stay warm without the furnace always working?
- Plastic on the windows will help a little, especially if you can keep at least a couple inches between the glass and the plastic. If you do not have carpeting, put down some rugs. Check your furnace filter, make sure it is clean. Also if the construction company left you hanging, take them to court, you may be limited to the amount you can recover in small claims, but it also might push them into doing the work.
- Q: Will covering the windows with thick painters plastic drastically help the window A/C unit cool the house down? Also, should i insulate the floor?
- You don't want to do this, you'll screw up the minimal complete airflow needed to your AC to function and obviously freeze the unit up. This will go on to compressor failure and a as an alternative giant restore bill.
