Q:This is a new house and they put 16 inch tiles in the bathrooms, which I don't care for. The floors are fine as far as leveling goes, but I would like to put 12 inch tiles directly over the 16 inch ones. Would there be any problems?: Tiles over tile is not a good idea. Just because the floor is level it isn't perfectly level. If the bottom of a tile is not perfectly level, you walking on it will eventually crack it. So the answer is no.

Q:My husband and I bought a house where most of the rooms (kitchen, dining room, entertainment room, den, and laundry room) are all tiled with these Terra cotta like tiles. They are a southern type rusty red and stain easily. My husband loves the tiles and wants to keep them. He‘s concented on changing the color if I want though, as long as I keep the origional tile. The difficulty is proportional to the number of cuts that are required to be performed and weather these cuts are straight or curved. There are also other expenses. 1.Soundness of sub floor. If poorly supported the tile will crack. 2.Does installation require removal of base molding and its replacement following the installation? 3.Moving of the appliances/furniture and so on. Finally, now days and roughly, the installer wants to make $260-400 per day. Tiling is never 1 day job since application of grout is required at least 24h following the installation. So if the job is straight forward 3.5 - 4.5 per square feet is a good price on the average. Considering it is with prep $5.00 sounds like Ok. New York City or LA for example may cost a bit more. Consider, though, that if your landlord doesn't like it, he can charge you your security deposit for removal. Taking tile off of counters is an expensive, messy process, so you might want to get the OK first. Good luck w/your project.

Q:Is it possible to remove just the top row of the ceramic tile on my bathroom walls without damaging the remaining tile? I‘d like to replace the top row with glass tiles for a more updated look.: It is possible, but be prepared to replace the entire thing. Hammer and chisel is the only way.

Try a spot in an inconspicuous place. My only concern for you is that the grout might have absorbed the black paint so the black tinting may remain once the paint is removed from the tile. Your test spot will reveal the results and you can decide to follow through with the rest of the room or not.
