Q: a few tiles are cracked near the sink. How can i fix it temporarily ( is it worth it?) or should i replace the tiles or the whole thing? how would i go about doing that?
If you can find the same tile, or even very similar tile, you should take up the exising tile and replace it with new ones. You will need to start by removing the grout between the tiles. You can buy a grout removal tool at most hardware stores, but it is 10 times easier if you have a rotary tool like a dremel or rotozip. With the grout near the effected tiles removed, you can use a rigid putty knife to pry the damaged tiles off the countertop surface. You may need to use a hammer to tap the tip of the putty knife under the broken tiles. Try not to touch undamaged tiles! Once the tiles are out, use the same putty knife (and hammer if necessary) to remove all or most of the mortar and grout from the exposed surface. You will need to mix new thinset or mortar to lay the new tile in. Lowes and Home Depot usually sell thinset and grout in smaller packages for small jobs or repair work. If the tiles are small, you will not be able to properly spread the mortar. Put a dollop of mortar in the center of where each tile should go and press the tile ontop of it to spread the mortar around. If it leaks out the side and comes up to the surface of the tile, make sure to clean it up before it dries. Once the new tiles are in place, let the mortar dry for a few hours (longer if it is humid). You can then mix the grout and spread it in the gaps near the new tile. Let the grout dry for about 10 or 15 minutes and then wipe the tiles clean and smooth the new grout with a damp sponge. The mortar and grout can be mixed with just water, especially for such a small job. Some stores might try to get you to buy the liquid additives for each. These are designed to keep the mortar and grout pliable for longer periods of time and are not necesssary for small jobs. Good Luck. If you need more info on a given step just say so.
Q: Hey there. We are in the process of adding a half bath to our home. We purchased tiles months ago at a tent sale at out local tile store. We have some wall corners that might require bullnosed corner tiles but this wasnt taken into account when we purchased the tiles and now we cannot find matching bullnose tiles anywhere.......Is there any was to finish the wall edges without using bullnosed tiles and have it still look good???
Bnose tile is a new simplified way of doing tile and was to remove one of the grout edges. So all you have to do is grout the top like they did in the old days a few years ago. You could also use a thin lat of flat trim, a brass or stainless steel edging, or caulking that matches the wall or tile. I think the simple grout is your best bet. PS. Where corners meet If the tile is same color through they can show. If it is glazed colored or just a thin color on top then no. In that case cut the tile back so that they do not quite reach the corner. Then there will be a slight inverted corner where you will grout or caulk. In neither case would you want to miter the corner. It will be too sharp and thin corners would be weak enough to chip.
Q: My husband and I are going to redo a very small, four by four, half bath over Thanksgiving weekend. I‘ve picked up bits and pieces of advice about installing the marble floor tiles I‘ve bought, but I want to make sure I have the right advice before starting this or buying anything:Tile must be sealed both before and after installing, and the best sealer is Sealers Choice Gold. This will seal both the tile and the grout. Preinstall sealing should be done after cutting, not before. Do the tile edges need to be sealed as well or only the tops?Only white modified thinset should be used (brand recommendations?)Non-sanded grout should be used, and 1/8 inch spacing is acceptable for 12x12 tiles.Tiles should be wrapped before cutting to avoid breakage? I‘ve never seen this recommended before, but I‘ve also never installed marble. Thanks so much!
Marble tile floors have been around for centuries. Even today, in an age of much simpler and less expensive options, marble remains synonymous with elegance and class. Installing marble is more complicated than installing ceramic or other types of tiles because the marble can't be cut on a standard tile cutter, instead needing a wet saw. Also, since the tiles are straight-cut in their manufacture, the tile surfaces have to be completely even with one another.
Q: There is a white ceramic tile floor with white grout in my bathroom. Some of the mastic (I think it was a combination mastic and grout, that could be used either way) is on top of the tile and dried on. Is there any way I can get it off there other than trying to chip at it and possibly ruin the tile?
Try doing a small area with a product normally used in the kitchen for scrubbing pans, it's called Barkeepers Friend, I've used it a few times in different applications and was quite happy with the results, still I don't know for sure about your situation so 'no promises'. Good luck
Q: I have this ceramic tile in my bathroom (on the wall, not the floor). There is absolutely nothing wrong with it, except it is an incredibly ugly color. I would like to paint it, rather than rip it all down just to put up more tile. Any suggestions?
No....it's not porous so there is nothing for the paint to stick to.
Q: The previous owner of my house did not correctly install tile in my bathroom. There is a thick grout line along the bathtub, and when I apply a good amount of pressure on a tile (full bodyweight), I can hear the grout grinding against the tub. I know the right thing to do is replace the tile but I have plenty of other home projects to do before we sell the house. Would it be acceptable to saw out the grout along the tub, refill it with new grout, then caulk? Would this at least fix the grinding noise I hear?
Heres a good tip...take some masking tape and stick to the tile in about 3 layers. mark onto the tape where you want to drill. Use a masonary bit that is compatable for use with tiles and start to drill really slow applying steady even pressure.Do not drill in at an angle as this will crack the glaze on the tile and then the whole tile eventually. Once you are through the tile speed up a little so you can drill into the masonary. When you have reached the depth you want slow down drilling,do not reverse the drill but slowly pull the drill bit out. Use a screw or nail to clean the debris out of the hole and then put your raw plug in.
Q: all ceraminc tiles, mounted in between to tiles maybe?
Your idea will not hold well and may be dangerous if you slip in shower and hit the shelf. Built-ins are better and safer.
Q: My family began to paste tiles, the budget has been bought more than 2 square, and buy back the tile is now posted enough and also a lot worse, would like to ask the forum friends, the normal paste tile loss is how much? Thank you first!
General your decoration company will give you the amount of assessment, because the process of paving will be damaged and other issues, so the exact number is also very troublesome.
Q: What is the probability that the two faulty tiles share an edge?
The number of ways you can select a position for the first tile is 64. The number of ways to position the second tile is then 63. So, the total number of ways to position 2 tiles is 64*63= 4032. But, since it doesn't matter if tile #1 and #2 are switched, you have to divide this by 2 (at least, if the tiles are all the same). That gives you 2016 different ways. The number of ways you can place a pair of tiles (so that they share an edge) is just the number of ways you can tile the pair horizontally plus the number of ways you can do it vertically, which for a square will be the same. So, twice the number of ways to tile the square horizontally is 2* (4+3)*8. The 2 is because we are taking twice the number, the 4 is the number of ways you can do it starting at one edge, the 3 is the number of ways starting one tile in, and the 8 is the number of horizontal rows. The total is 112. So, there are 112 of the 2016 total ways where the tiles share an edge. This makes the final probability 112/2016.
Q: How can the stickers on the tiles clean up?
1, first attached to the tiled surface of the stickers to tear off, with warm water (winter application of hot water) towel soaked in the stickers at the repeated wipe twice; then wet and wet towels marked with soap Traces of repeated wiping several times; finally with a clean wet and dry towel to wipe the soap, stickers traces were removed. The following are the same as the " 2, with a toothpaste evenly applied to the surface of the stickers, stay a little while, and then wipe with a soft cloth, and sometimes more stickers, more solid, just did not remove the traces of the re-applied toothpaste 3, with a pen paper knife scraping, suitable for glass, floor tiles and other hard bottom; rub with alcohol, suitable for glass, floor tiles, clothing, etc .; frozen, stickers after freezing hard, you can directly tear, Should not use alcohol, scrape and other methods.
