Q: I hava a 12x12 ceramic tile that we want to hang on the wall (not permanently). The tile has no hooks or anything in it. What‘s the best way to hang it?
Ceramic tile is a wonderfully versatile material. Not only does it make beautiful flooring and countertop surfaces, it can be crafted as a work of art in its own right. If the piece has a hanging wire or other hanging device, then hanging a ceramic tile wall piece is no different from hanging a picture. However, many ceramic tile artworks do not include any built-in hanging devices, and so it may be necessary to install one. 1. Lay the ceramic tile wall piece flat on a work surface. Place several pieces of cardboard underneath the tile. Clamp the tile to the work surface. 2. Determine two locations near the top corners of the piece for holes. They must be at least one inch from the edge of the tile and at least three inches from the top of the tile. 3. Cover the drilling locations with duct tape and mark the drilling points. 4. Install a carbide-tipped masonry bit into a variable-speed drill for drilling regular ceramic tile. For drilling porcelain, use a diamond-tipped drill bit. 5. Drill slowly into the tile. Apply very light pressure while drilling to avoid cracking the tile or its glazed surface. 6. Thread a hanging wire into the drilled holes. Twist the wire securely around itself behind the tile. 7. Hang the ceramic wall piece in the desired location from the hanging wire.
Q: hey guys my house just got renovated a few days ago... it seems like some tiles have tough stains on it. is there a type of detergent or anything that removes it off? it looks well ugly and makes the surface rough... it's on both my floor and wall tiles
Muriatic Acid is what you want, but use heavy rubber gloves and use sparingly. Don't let it spatter on carpets or furniture. Don't let it spatter on metal. it is a weak acid and will bubble up when it gets onto cement. To neutralize it, you can use a solution of bicarbonate of Soda and water. White vinegar may well work also and you might want to try that one first since it has less precautions that would come with its use. You would neutralize that the same way. If your tile grouting has been sealed, you will have to redo that.
Q: I need help with my white tile grout. Nothing I do keeps/gets it clean. Any tips for an easy fix to dirty grout, or does anyone know if it‘s possible to add color to grout after it‘s been set?
Use straight clorox on a sponge and sponge it over the tile...then let it sit for about an hour before wiping down really good and wash it off with some soapy water to remove the chlorine. Then use a good grout sealer according to the package directions. You can get the sealer at Lowes or Home Depot ...this will help it to not get so dirty too quickly and it should be easier to clean after sealing it. In the case that it is too far gone to get clean with the bleach you can use some white paint and a small brush....I would use something that is rated for mortar painting ...like maybe the waterproof paint for basement walls ....you could also change the color of it this way but you may have to continue to touch it up every 6 months or so if you change the color.
Q: Moved into a house where prior owner used glazed porcelain tile. Job unfinished but a little tile left behind. Not enough! Can anyone help me find GEO CERAMICHE Natura Sable BL 12x12 (or larger, I can cut it down). Have looked online to no avail (yet). Neighbors tell me the tile was bought at least 4 years ago but not later. Can anyone help me find 5 pieces of this tile?
Find where the tile was bought 1st.. Many big box stores will private label name brand tiles ( and many products) so you can t cross shop them..After 4 years I won t give you much of a chance to find them ..sorry... Styles change along w/ technology and they switch things to change w/ the times. It may be still available but chances are slim..Is it in a place that some sort of mosaic can be used as a decoration? Or maybe a good rug? Start w/ the big box stores but don t waste to much gas chances are slim .. I wish you luck ..
Q: What type of drill bit should I buy to cut into 4 x 4 ceramic tile on the wall? Can I place the bit into a router? The hole is 10 x 10 and I need it to be 10 1/2 x 10 1/2. There is 5/8 DW w/ metal studs behind it.
I tile every day of my life, and hope you have extra tile pieces. As one answer states a diag. Grinder and a diamond blade. I go through a couple a week, but certainly you can't pull a wet saw to the wall. I'll assume not, but might you make the cuts on grout lines? Also, I'm wondering about even 5/8 drywall as a substrate for tile work? You might also use a Dremel with a proper bit for the very corners, but with care the Di. Grinder will suffice, You probably can expect cutting into the dry wall as well. Steven Wolf just my two sense I'm just purchasing a FEIN Multi tool, that I'll use exclusively for installed tile cutting, especially grout.
Q: Please help me decide the right color to use. We are renovating our bathroom and I always wanted a navy blue or maroon toilet bowl. Today, I see a perfect navy blue/dark blue toilet bowl but I do not know what is the best color of tiles or walls should I use. We do not like white tiles or walls since it is really hard to maintain. My husband wanted a floor to ceiling wall tiles. Please advise.
I also like floor to ceiling tile but usually not the whole room, but definitely in the whole tub/shower area. I think the rest of the room should be painted. As for color choices with a navy blue toilet... Thinking into the future and a possible sale of your home someday, I would go with a neutral color tile, possibly using the same tile (floor to ceiling) in the tub/shower area and on the floor of the bathroom. This really makes the whole room appear larger. If you go with the navy toilet bowl, gray and beige shades of tile would both go well and keep the hard-to-change things in the room, neutral. A new owner could easily change out a toilet if they did not appreciate the look of navy as you do but replacing the tile is a big issue. Stay neutral. So, navy bowl, beige or gray tile, sink-?, countertop-neutral complimentary to the tile, walls-shade of gray or beige. You can then add a pop or two of another color to liven up the room if desired. Like red navy towels or throw rug. Or gray print shower curtain. Or a colorful piece of art on the wall.
Q: Once I removed the old tiles is there anything else I should do before I lay the new ones?
It should be ok as long as you sweep it and mop it.
Q: I‘m planning to tile up my space. It‘s a 27 square meters. I‘ve calculated the number of tiles. It will be around 140 to 150 pieces with extra tiles. How much or how many bags of tile adhesive will I consume for the 27 square meters space using 150 pieces of tiles? or What is the area a bag of tile adhesive could cover? Can you show me a computation.
You don t say what size tile it is and what your going over as far as a substrate. It makes a difference. Since I familiar with the coverage in s/f and your post suggests you came from the states I ll use a s/f format and some generalizations. Assuming you have a larger tile you should be using a larger notched trowel.1/4x3/8 but you may want to use a larger 1/2x1/2. I ll go off of a 1/4x3/8 trowel. A standard 50# bag of thin set will cover an area of 60/70 s/f using a 1/4x3/8 trowel. Splitting the difference and using 65 s/f per bag, divide 65 into the 290 s/f you have. Or 4.46 bags. So you ll need 5 , 50# bags of thin set using a 1/4x3/8 trowel. If your using a different size trowel , all bags have a coversion chart on the back to figure your coverage. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q: I have a small round accent table with formica top. I‘d like to try my hand at mosaic tiling on the top. Is it possible to do this over the formica, or do I have to remove it. If so, what do I use to prep the formica before tiling. p.s. I‘ve never tiled anything before. Using this as a learning project. Thanks for any suggestions, tips.
Lightly sand the formica and then prime it with kilz it. Let it dry and go to town with your mosaic. I did this to a kitchen island 7 years ago and it's still holding up.
Q: To re-do the kitchen so to change the previous, but the tiles left on the traces of viscose, how to remove it? Is there any good way? First, thank you
Depending on the degree of adhesion on the tile, you can try to get rid of the following methods: 1. We usually use the wiping oil painted to evenly, slightly with nails to pull out the part of the first pull out, the rest of the wet towel to wipe off. 2. With a hair dryer blowing with plastic parts, the glue can be very easy to get off the bar. 3. Spray the oil spirits in the location of rubber marks, after a while a plastic mark that is out, may wish to try. 4. With alcohol + eraser can also be, although this method is more tired, but the effect is good. 5. You can take a piece of vinegar covered with a rag to cover the whole place of plastic marks, until the plastic sticky stains completely wet, you can use the ruler easily removed. 6. If you can, first with blisters, and then coated with a little detergent, and then look at the effect of old toothbrush brush. 7. with a cloth dip tip or Erguotou wipe will have a good effect. 8. With soap plus a little nitrogen and turpentine mixture, you can also remove the glue marks. 9. with a good sticky transparent glue repeatedly tear sticky sticky place, you can also remove some, so that glue marks no longer obvious. Coated with a little bit of sodium water and then rub, a wipe off, or paint thinner can also be used. 10. With a cotton swab dipped in nail polish or sesame oil wipe, glue marks can be removed. 11. Use a special cleaning agent or sports shoes to remove the ointment. 12. If it is left for a long time and has hardened traces, you can use a hot towel to cover it soft, and then try the above methods.
