I have a decent sized family room (14x14) and I'm considering a sectional in the middle of the room instead of against walls (which is more traditional). - I guess I watch the same shows. It seems as long as you can move through the room easily you are ok. Lighting may be an issue. You will not want cords running across the floor.

- It could be a spray that they use to keep the fabric fresh and to keep the damp out. I had it with mine and it faded away after a few weeks. Your sofa has probably been wrapped up for a while and thats why it needs a good airing. You could spray febreeze, it wont do it any harm.

- get a soffa cover :) or get a BIG BIG rug to put under ur sofa it shouldnt be matchy matchy that would look stupid but their should be some things in the materials that kindof match
