- Q: Out of the blue, my main bathroom that guests primarily use starting having an earthy smell coming from the sink drain. Its on the main floor, and there are no floors above it (in other words, not another sink above it). I examined the plumbing under the sink, and everything seems to be in working order, no leaks, trap is in good shape, etc.What should I do here?

- Q: About 10-12 years ago we had our bathroom sink resurfaced (I don't know what with, and it's now rather pliable/rubbery), and it's beginning to peel around the faucet area, and in some very small spots in the main part of the sink bowl. Is there a best way to remove the new surface, which is quite ugly peeling, to get back to the old surface? Thanks.
- General contractor (12 years) It's a Paint specifically used to Porcelain called Tough as Tile its a self leveling epoxy. You got 10 years out of it, so it did it's job very well, but to be honest...Your better off just getting a new sink. It would be well worth it in the long run. Sinks are very inexpensive now-a-days. - Q: I've got a badly clogged bathroom sink. I took out the draiin cover and I can see where the water is just standing/ draining extremely slowly. I can't reach the clog, but I was able to get a wire coat hanger into it and pull out a small bit of hair (not sure how hair even got into the sink!) but it didn't do anything to speed the draning. There could be a small bit of gravel in the drain from a few months ago as well as some bits of paper (all on accident, I'd never put anything down there!). I already tried some baking soda and vinegar but it didnt help, the vinegar just made the water level raise. The water is maybe 6 or 7 inches from the drain (not in the sink, in the pipe). What should I do? Thanks for your help :)
- The clog is, most likely, in the p-trap. If you look under the sink, it's the pipe is shaped like a U. A coat hanger won't make the bend, to reach most of the clog. So, if you don't feel that taking it off yourself is possible, they (hardware, home depot stores) carry plastic drain snakes. Designed exactly for the problem you have. Be careful, wear goggles,& good luck.

- Q: I just remodeled my bathroom and the contracted crew installed a receptacle about 2 inches above my sink is that against code? From what I understand a receptacle has to be at least 18" from any water source. Can I keep the receptacle there or do I have to move it? The receptacle is GFCI and Im talking about Virginia, United States.
- It is STILL 120 Volts. The electric shaver receptacle is maybe 15 volts(I never checked) and that is more the typical or receptacle that would be put there.

- Q: I am 17 years old and my bathroom sink is clogged apparently with a lot of hair from a year ago and I have told my guardian a numerous amount of times that its having that problem and it needs to be fixed as soon as possible but since they arent doing anything about it then I need to take matters into my own hands and try to fix it and I dont have much money right now so this needs to also be average or cheap. - Before you waste any money on those one-shot solutions, try this: Find a largish pair of pliers and take the P-trap under the sink loose. Put a bucket or large bowl under before you get it loose. Any water still in the pipe and sink will come out. Tip the P-trap (it's called that because of its shape, not because it's full of pee) and look in it. Can you see the clog right there? Fish it out. Problem's fixed, no money spent. No clog? Reach up into the tailpiece coming down from the sink. Sometimes the clog gets stuck up there (weird when it does, but it happens). Reach into the pipe going into the wall. Fish around, try everything. A cheap drain snake costs about what a gallon of Drano costs, and besides working better, works over and over. Try that instead. Your Drano you use one time and it's gone; the drain snake you use now, hang it up and use it next time, and next time, etc. Got it all? Great, put it all back together. Check for leaks. Job's done! Got a leak? Make sure the washers are pointing the right direction, if they have a shape. Rubber ones are just rectangular in section, hard plastic ones are cones. The nut bears against the flat side, the sharp side wedges between the two pipes as you tighten the nut. Good luck with it.
