Q:I undid the P trap under my bathroom sink to clear a clog and now when I put the whole thing back together it leaks out of the top of the slip joint that connects the down pipe from the sink drain to the j-pipe. The down pipe is 1 - 1/4 and the j-pipe is 1-1/2 and I am using the correct reducer gasket. It was not leaking (and never had) before I took it apart. I have tried using a new gasket and teflon tape on the threads of the slip joint to no avail. Please give me some idea as to what the problem might be. Q:I checked for a valve under the sink to see if it possibly wasn't open all the way but i did not see any valves. The cold water pressure is fine in the bathroom sink but hot water has been horrible since I moved in 7 months ago. Kitchen, and bathtub hot water pressure is just fine. The sink appeared to be newer if not brand new when I moved in. I live in the city, if that helps to know that I have city water and not well water. Q:I just found the cabinet underneath my bathroom sink to be completely soaked and this is the second time its happened, first time was a couple months ago. After first time, I shut off both valves and checked all the fittings and nothing seemed to be leaking. I turned the water back on and everything was fine. However, today I came to find the same thing happen. I've shut the water off again at this point, but I'm guessing none of the fittings have a normal. Could there be some sort of back up in the pipes?? I'm in Ohio so it is fairly cold right now and was also a couple months ago. Possible that something is freezing slightly and backing up the system? I also have young children who could have clogged it with something. Please help: Hi, Jeholman. I have to suspect the big pipes under the sink, the drain lines. But let's look at the whole thing. Take out any and all stuff in the cabinet, get a flashlight, turn on the faucet full-blast, and have a look for leaks. Feel free to poke and prod things while this is happening, as it may disclose a weak or loose fitting. Go for any found. Also look for leaks where there shouldn't be any with good parts - like just behind the handle on the shut-off valves (non-repairable, just replace). Finally, with kids, it may be possible that enough water has been splashed up top, around the faucet base or the edge of the sink, to have leaked down into the cabinet, even with connections underneath OK. Just be thorough, and you'll find it.

Q:It eventually accumulates to the point that the drain gets backed up, draino doesn't really help. We have to take the whole stopper part out and pull out the gunk. It doesn't happen in my other sinks.: It's crud. Crud= any solid particles that go down your drain and then are held together by wet sticky liquids or glop. Hair, skin flakes, makeup powder, food particles from teethe brushing, tooth brush bristles which are all gumped together by sticky stuff like, tooth paste, saliva, face oils, face creams and hand soaps.
