Q:Well I was cleaning my floor because we were about to install new tile flooring and when I went outside to get a load of tile my girlfriend flushed the bucket of water down the toliet without checking if a rag was in it and by the time I got back the toliet backed up and she shut both the toliet and bathroonm sink valves off, well the toliet I fixed and got the rag. But the sink, once I turned the valves on the water barely trickled out.....Whats the problem and how do I fix it??: sounds like the sink valve never was turned back on all the way,try to tighten the screw on the valve the turn it on,or it may be stripped take the knob off (should be Phillips head) and try a pair of pliers to turn it on (don't force it you will strip it) on rare occasion the shutoff valve is defective you will have to get a plumber to replace.whats weird is that you should have hot and cold water valves under the sink one should have worked properly and you should have some kind of pressure.like i said make sure they are both opened all the way..good luck Bill

Q:I undid the P trap under my bathroom sink to clear a clog and now when I put the whole thing back together it leaks out of the top of the slip joint that connects the down pipe from the sink drain to the j-pipe. The down pipe is 1 - 1/4 and the j-pipe is 1-1/2 and I am using the correct reducer gasket. It was not leaking (and never had) before I took it apart. I have tried using a new gasket and teflon tape on the threads of the slip joint to no avail. Please give me some idea as to what the problem might be. Q:Why doesnt my bathroom sink drain right?: Go underneath the sink and remove the U-bend, you can just screw it off with your hands. Then clean it out. You have a blocked pipe. Just make sure to put a pan underneath as a small amount of water may spill out as you are removing it. Alternativly you could try mr. Muscle sink and drain unblocker, it might work. Good luck

Q:They are pretty much tiny people..: That's a really racist thing to say there and you're being rather stereotypical. Just because quite a few may be tiny does not mean that they all are. Have you seen Yao Ming? Is he tiny? Would he fit in a sink? Educate yourself because you say something else stupid because what in your head made you think anyone other than maybe a baby or a pet would fit in a sink?

Q:It eventually accumulates to the point that the drain gets backed up, draino doesn't really help. We have to take the whole stopper part out and pull out the gunk. It doesn't happen in my other sinks.: A rather unpleasant answer, but here goes. What goes down your bathroom sink drain is known as "Grey Water". It consists of water (naturally), hair, soap, shampoo, dead skin, shavings and other nasty things. Your bathroom sink drain is most probably slower to empty than your actual bath, hence the "gunk" is not flushed away. To alleviate the problem, obtain caustic soda crystals, take out your plug, pour as much crystals as you can into the drain, leave overnight if possible, the water in the u-bend will be enough to start the crystals working. Rinse through with hot water in the morning, job done. NB, treat caustic soda crystals as toxic and strong alkaline, take precautions as regards eyes, hands etc, and ensure all the soda has gone before using the sink. You may have to do this more than once, but it does work.

Q:My husband recently fixed a leak in the bathroom tub (sealed something) and obviously had to turn the water off while working on this. Since then the hot water in the bathroom sink does not work when we turn the faucet on (the cold water faucet does work and come out fine). Also not the kitchen sink has a delay when turning it off (water comes out about 5 seconds after turning off) Any ideas why this may be occurring?: He might not have completely turned the hot water valve back on at the water heater ( or if there is a cold feed that one has to be full open too. I doubt this is the problem though. I think somewhere in the process of fixing the problem small bits of rubber and crap in the pipes was pushed forward when he turned the water back on and got stuck in the hot water cartridge in the faucet. Have him shut the water off under the sink , remove the cartridge ( or stem) and put a rag over the hot water opening then turn the valve under the sink back on for a few seconds to blast out whatever is in the pipe. Then he can try to clean the cartridge out or evaluate the condition of the washer on the stem if it isn't a cartridge. Assuming the water came out full force when the cartridge/stem was removed it is resolved by cleaning or replacing. If no water came out, it is time to work your way back down the plumbing system to see that everything is turned on. Once you have eliminated everything you can, it will then make sense to call a plumber if the hot water still doesn't work.

Q:my sink has a stench coming up from the drain i believe. not sure what it is or how it got to smell so bad, but seems like it only comes up when i turn the water on(like the water gets the smell moving). really dont know what to do here? any advice?: You need to remove the drain cover and remove the inner parts under the drain cover. There is probably hair and other debris stuck in there. Get a small drain cleaner at Lowe's and remove all the gunk. Then get an old tooth brush and clean all around inside the drain.
