- Q:I'm looking for the buckeye candy recipe from he Better Homes Gardens Christmas Cookie publication from 1998. They had a 50-State salute that year, and the buckeye was the recipe for Ohio. If anyone has this, please please post it for me.
- Try this: Makes: about 72 buckeyes Prep: 45 minutes Chill: 4 hours 30 minutes Ingredients 3/4 cup butter (no substitutes) 3-1/4 to 3-3/4 cups sifted powdered sugar 1 cup peanut butter 1 tablespoon milk 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 16 ounces semisweet chocolate 1 tablespoon shortening Directions 1. Melt butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Or, microwave in a microwave-safe bowl on 100-percent power (high) for 1 to 2 minutes. 2. Combine melted butter and 2 cups of the powdered sugar in a medium mixing bowl. Beat until smooth. Add peanut butter, beating until combined. Stir in milk and vanilla. Beat in enough of the remaining powdered sugar to make a firm, crumbly-looking mixture. 3. Roll mixture into 1-inch balls. Arrange on a tray; chill for 30 minutes. 4. Meanwhile, melt chocolate and shortening in a heavy saucepan over low heat. Cool slightly. Using a fork, dip three-fourths of each ball into chocolate mixture so the ball resembles a buckeye. (If the chocolate mixture hardens, remelt over low heat.) 5. Place balls, undipped portion up, on a tray lined with waxed paper. Chill until firm. Store in refrigerator. Makes about 72 buckeyes. - Q:My vegetable garden is about 40 x 40. I live in Central IL. What should I do for it this fall so it will produce well next spring and summer. I intend to till it up but don't know about adding fertilizer, lime, compost, etc. I see those huge piles of fertilizer along corn fields but the pile is very small compared to the size of the field, how would you know how much of the stuff to use in your home garden and how on earth would you ever spread so little of amount? Ten points and a bushel of tomatoes for the best answer!

- Q:I'm thinking about planting something in my gardening and my friends tell me that pH is important factor to consider when I'm trying to decide what to plant. What's so important about pH?
- Different plants do best in different environments. There are plants that need acidic soil to do well, such as rhododendrons, azaleas, blueberries. Others prefer alkaline soil, such as lavendar, irises. So it depends on what you want to grow. You can get a general idea about the soil in your area by observing the weeds that grow there, but you will have to check a reference guide for this. It is easier to choose plants that will naturally do well in your area than to try to modify the soil drastically. A lot of plants will do well anywhere. Observe the gardens around you and talk with experienced people at your garden center.
- Q:the one's from stores don't seem to work
- Good home made fertilizers: Compost: made form leaves, twigs, grass clippings and garbage. Wood ashes from the fireplace and/or grill. Epsom salt (in small doses )can make nutrients more available to plants. If you decide to buy some fertilizer use a balanced organic fertilizer Gypsum is a good additive for most vegetables.
- Q:I'm getting married soon and I really don't know a whole lot about cooking. I did find a Better Homes and Gardens Red Checked Newlywed Edition cookbook. Thankfully it has no red checks! It looked good, with information on setting up your first kitchen and color pics explaining different utensils, but I was wondering if the recipes were any good. Has anyone recently bought/ received/ used this or similar cookbooks? It's $30 so I would really like to know before I spent that much $. Please and thank you!

- Q:I have a kitten but I went out of town and my parents kept it at their house. When I got home I was swarmed with fleas. I have fogged my house three times and there seems to be less but they are still there. I don't what else to do besides hire a professional but I don't have the money to pay one. I also understand I need to spray outside but it continues to rain.
- You need to treat the kitten with Frontline or what ever your vet recommends. Use a vet approve spot on treatment every month from now on. This will help resolve your current problem and prevent future infestations. You have to vacuum everyday for several weeks and fog again after a few days as needed. It can take several weeks to resolve a bad flea infestation. There are four stages of fleas in your carpet. Eggs, Larvae, Pupae, and Adult. The foggers only works on eggs, larvae and adult. The pupae is the hardest stage to kill. The fleas are in a protective cocoon and pesticide does not bother them. They will wait inside the cocoon for months until they sense vibration and heat which tells them a food source is near by (you). By vacuuming everyday you create vibration and heat in the room. This causes them to hatch out an be exposed to the pesticide residue left by your fogging. Instead of fogging you might consider just using a can of flea spray that you manually spray on the carpet. You can then target hard to get areas like under the bed or furniture that the fog might not get to. You can also avoid areas like your clothes and dishes that you might not want to get pesticide all over. Just be sure it is labeled as a flea spray that kills fleas and eggs.
