Q: The previous owner of my home put up walls for separate rooms OVER existing carpet in the basement. He/she did not install baseboard along the new walls. I'm planning on replacing the carpet in the basement as well as installing baseboard along the walls. What should I do first? The carpet installer is going to have to cut the carpet from underneathe the walls in order to replace it. Should I wait until after the new carpet is installed or can I go ahead and put the new baseboard in regardless?: Carpet first .. baseboard after..to hide the staples..and hold the carpet edge down..if you put carpet in after baseboards you will have problems with unravelling of the carpet with your vacuum..carpets first.

Q: I steam clean my carpet twice a year but lately because of a sick pet it is more often. No matter if I do it myself or have a professional do it, I see dark brown water. It has never been clear. How many times do I go over the carpet to get the clean water. Is this all dirt? Or is it color from the carpet and pad. It drives me nuts. If you have the money, you should seek into getting tiles or laminate flooring. To me, it's way more sanitary and much more easy to clean.

I have people coming for the holidays please help.....Thanks Shaye: I think that if you use dish detergent in warm water and try to get it on the spots and blot it, repeatedly, you'll get it out. Any degreaser should help. Ball point pen ink is oil based. You could try straight detergent, then rinse/blot with warm clean water.

Q: Refreshing my memory been a while so wondering how to lay carpet with a seam. Don't have enough carpet so have some extra carpet that looks the same that I need to use so wanting to lay the carpet with a seam so all the carpet will look as one.: Practice - practice - practice First, the carpet pieces all need the fibers going in the same direction....if you can't do that, it won't matter how skilled you are at seaming a carpet, the piles running different dirctions will stand out. Clean cuts - you need a clean cut along the seam, on BOTH pieces to get them to look good when they are joined. Two kinds of tape - adhesive, and 'carpet' tape (which needs a seaming iron). BEFORE the carpet is stretched for the room, the adjacent pieces of carpet need to be joined. This involves making a straight, clean cut on both edges - this cut should match identically. I achieve this by overlapping the two pieces, and using a straight edge, cut through both layers at once. (You need a VERY sharp blade). Next, apply the seaming tape to the underside of the carpet. I prefer to use the professional grade carpet tape, and I own all the necessary carpet tools to do this. If you do not own them, they can be rented from a local business that rents tools and equipment. I wouldnt make the investment in tools for one room of carpet. If you are using carpet tape, cut it to fit the length of the seam (actually allow it to extend beyond the ends of the seam, for a couple of inches) Plug in the seaming iron, allow it to heat up, and then place it UNDER the carpet, but ON the tape. As the seaming iron heats up the tape, slide it along the length of the seam, pulling the carpet edges together behind it, and press them firmly into the tape. (A roller is handy for this) Do NOT overlap the edges, do NOT allow them to pucker...this is why a good clean cut is so important. Allow the tape to cool, and then you can stretch the carpet and trim it out. Have Fun

Q: My carpet is going to kill me. This is southern texas, and there is always dust everywhere. How can I thoroughly clean the carpet? I really can't afford a big machine, and I borrowed my moms cheap one, and it did nothing. If I buy carpet cleaner, can I just scrub it with my tub scrub brush or something?: I do not think you can ever thoroughly clean a carpet, regardless of your region. My suggestion is, use a high powered, vacuum, like a shopvac, with a carpet brush. This will suck as much dust out of the carpet as possible. Do not use an upright vacuum, or one with a moving brush, because this creates vibrations, which will just drive much of the dust between the carpet and under-pad, even between the under-pad and the floor. If the dust is really bothering you, consider pulling up the carpet. What is underneath? If there is a finish, great. If not, it probably is not that expensive to put down wood or tile. Then you can sweep and/or wash to get your floor the cleanest possible. I live in southern Ontario, in an ancient house, and just last year I pulled up the carpet in my front room. It revealed great-looking floorboards, and has made me feel so much better -- you would not believe the amount of dust and crap under the carpet and under-pad.

Q: OK so i was wondering i i can touch a prayer rug during when menstruation cause i wash them every day and i wash every ones in my family so i wash 5 is it haram to touch it?: Yes it's ok to touch the prayer rug. The only thing that we cannot touch is the Quran and we shouldn't equate the Quran with the Prayer rug, you can even sit on the prayer rug whenever you want, remember people pray outside on the floor without a prayer rug and who knows what has been on that floor, also people use their jackets to pray on sometimes when they are out and don't have a prayer rug with them and if it's a woman I'm sure she's had her cycle while wearing that jacket

Q: My male cat just recovered from a urinary tract infection. He urinated on my beautiful fairly new woven rug for the very first time (he ALWAYS goes in his litter box); that's how we knew he had an infection. Ever since that one little offense, he decided that the rug is his and he drags it around my house. I sprayed and cleaned his tinkle off of it immediately right after the offense, why is he doing this? I put the rug back but over and over he drags it to other rooms. How can I claim my rug back?: Agree with Lindsey. However take the rug to be thoroughly cleaned to get rid of the odour then reclaim as already suggested.
