- Nick... it's evident from your previous question about the engine being locked up, that you have no engine building experience and this question confirms it. I assume that you have invested a lot of money in parts and machine work and it would be bad to mess all that up by a shoddy assembly job. I suggest that you find a competent mechanic and let him assemble the engine. BUT to answer your question.....you will need to find out the clearance specs for the main and rod bearings. Then purchase several sticks of the appropriate sized plastigage. Remove all the main bearing caps and clean all the oil or assembly lube off the bearing and crank. If you put any lube on the upper bearing half, then the crank needs to come out and that needs to be cleaned off. With crank in place and dry, lay a 1 strip of plastigage on each crank journal parallel with crankshaft and slightly off center. Install all main bearing caps and torque to spec. DO NOT rotate crankshaft while plastigage is in place. Remove caps and using the paper that the plastigage was in, measure the width of the crushed plastigage strip. If within specs, you're ok....if not...find out why. Do the rod bearings the same way, 2 at a time and dont rotate crank with the plastigage in place

- I just lubed up my skateboard bearings today. Sometimes you cant remove the shield (the yellow-gold part in the picture). If the shield is removable you can take a razor blade and stick it in the tiny gap between the shield and the bearing wall and lift up the shield to expose the ball bearings. you should do it carefully so you can put the shield back when you're done. If you're doing this to lube up the bearings, drop in a couple drops of lube and pinch the bearing and spin it so the lube coats the inside. then brush the ball bearing with a q-tip to remove excess lube.
- Q:So i just bought some sector 9 ABEC 7 bearings. Is it ok if i buy the speed cream lubricant, take the bearings appart, and apply the lub without cleaning them? They are Like less then a week old (the bearings).
- First off, they are a downhill bearing, if your street or vert skating i recumbent independent 7's. Second, speed cream is only really necessary when your bearings start to wear down and start to slow and make that horrible noise. if you put it in straight away it won't do much but collect dirt. so just wait a while.

- If the bearings aren't sealed, blast the insides where all the little ball bearings are with a degreaser spray, or WD-40 if you have no degreaser. Repack the bearings with some white lithium grease. You can get that in a small tube for a couple bucks--plenty to do all your bearings with.
- Q:I went to a Kal-tire and the service technician told me I needed new front wheel bearings. I asked him to do the part look up and told me it was a sealed assembly part with the hub and it would cost 714 dollars for both Hubs. Does this seem valid? I looked up on some parts websites and I was able to buy just the wheel bearings and this was a lot cheaper. any opinions?

- No. It doesn't do anything to help the wheels. If you insist on trying, take the bearings out. If for some reason you insist on keeping those in there too, make sure you haven't clean them recently or have put lubricant or speed cream in there because it will freeze the bearings and probably create more water than you want in there. I don't recommend it at all, all it will do is make your wheels colder. Also I'm not being mean on the if you insists, just you wont know for yourself if you don't try so if you're like me and need to try something even though it probably wont work, I say that. Again though please don't, because this is one of these things I've tried =P
- Q:how to replace front wheel bearings on AWD vehicles?
- Most AWD vehicles use a sealed front hub. Meaning the bearings are not replaceable and the hub assembly requires replacement. Depending on the vehicle... a sealed unit can be replaced with basic hand tools in a driveway. Simply unbolt the wheels, brake callipers, remove the rotors, remove the front (CV shaft / axle) retaining nut, unbolt the hub. Reverse the order to install. If you are referring to a full size pickup style... I would recommend you have a mechanical back ground. The reason is because you will be replacing the bearings. You must know how to pack bearings with grease (unless it is a oil bearing, which means you are doing hub seals also). You must know how to install and torque the bearings, or you will have premature bearing failure... worst case scenario, the wheels fall off while driving on the road. Good luck with repairs

I am a hockey player so I need some good wheels and bearings that will hold up, but I also don't want them to be expensive. If anyone has some good suggestions that would be great. I usually just buy the stock bearings and wheels, but they are getting expensive. Also is it worth it to get bigger wheels for the back two and smaller ones for the front?
